Sorry in PC lab can't do Chinese...

Based on your statement, I will choose MIT over Columbia without hesitation(not because MIT dinged me w/o interview and Columbia offered me an interview)

1. If already stated you sortta don't want to see 100 lines of PDEs and Stochastic Calculus Theory, but I am sorry ... if you go to Columbia you are gonna to see tons of those as well as programing.

2. Even you can't make up your mind about going quant or not rite now , MIT still gives you more flexibility to choose which route you want to dig into.

3. People have different opinions about which school has better brand and I totally respect that. However, we are taking about IEOR department V. Sloan. A leading business school can offer you an extreme rich access to alumni and more networking events. Alumni resources are so important and most of top b schools alumni are considered themselves in a class of their own... exclusive ... ( e.g HBS ppl will say they graduated from HBS and Penn MBA will just say they are Wharton alumni).  IEOR clearly states that you won't have any access to the B school recruiting process, keep that in mind.

4. Ppl will argue that MIT's class is too big, but for MFE you also have 70-80 peers to compete with you. Not to mention that there are also 90+ MSOR students who share the same career resources with you( trust me I met some of them and their academic abilities and determinations to get top jobs are not less than MFE) ... So I won't say Columbia is 100% > MIT, however Sloan >>> IEOR professional careerwise( research is another story, too many rock star faculty in IEOR)

and following reasons are more or less minor ... probably just for entertainment purpose only... you guys can ignore ...
1. Boston is a nicer and cleaner city, a little bit cheaper than New York
2. Too many guys(Chinese) at NYC are players .... Boston guys are generally nicer .... as a girl you may find yourself happier there

In your case, I would put more weight to location when comparing the two schools.  For graduate school, you are basically looking for two things, brand name and location.

In Finance, Columbia and MIT have equal brand name, means neither is more prestigious than the other, in China and in the United States.
Location-wise, Columbia is in NYC, NYC>Boston if you want to do Finance and find a job, the two cities are just so different.  I agree that NYC is more playable and Boston is nicer, but hey are you taking guys personality/quality of the city into consideration when you make the choice?  That sounds really naive to me at least.

Basically I think you need to know exactly what you are looking for.  Both schools have similar brand name no matter you stay or you come back, then why not give yourself more flexibility by choosing a location that can lead to more opportunities of staying?

After all, I don't think you could go wrong with either choice.  After going through so many interviews, I realize the more technical stuff can easily impress more people.  Well I understand you don't like math as much, but hey it's only 8 months, I don't think that's the major factor you should consider.  That's just my 2 cents.

(and sorry there is no chinese typing in the lab)

Thoughtful argument

I still vote for MIT given LZ is an adorable lady who claims that She doesn't want to see to many crazy math anymore

Yes I agree with LS location is important ... but I don't think there is a big gap job searching wise btw Bos and NYC considered the fact LZ has an offer from Sloan.
LS's location logic will more applies to Pace V. Northeastern, in that case I would say location matters the most...

About brand name ... well I think sometimes placement record is more important... Hypothetically: if I receive offers from Columbia NYU( most likely will get dinged ) CMU(NYC) Mfe programs ... the 1st one I will eliminate will be Columbia...  I think HYP + MIT + Stanford are in a league of their own .... but that's probably just my own ignorance about school brands ....

its really a good job. u can wear t-shirt to work every day and can have first hand experience to the market. Chief investment officer is in the group and CFO often drops by. NO ONE WAS FIRED EVEN DURING FINANCIAL CRISIS... good pay (starting position is AVP). I don't know why u did not take it... its very competitive to get in. most ppl are phds. ....

intern or full time?

忽然想起来我之前被BOA(atl)差点录了做矿工...
摊手

我当时那个散漫, 低积极性, 弱履历+一个大mistake都能蛮接近那个职位
可见机会也还是很多的 没有那么严峻(?)

they have certain procedures to hire full time ppl. three hours test and programming on site. very stressful. they recently hired a post doc from GA TECH.... md is emory's alumni. thats why u may have a chance ... but i highly doubt they will hire a fresh ba. When i was interviewing with CMU, rick knew most of the ppl in the group...
