2. To understand the most important characteristic of a society, one must study its major cities.
In the era of rapidly social development and technological advancement, major cities or metropolises have been aspired more often than any other areas attributing to more chances and better life conditions. Admittedly, other areas such as villages, towns contains main, original characteristic of a society, especially one having a long history. Yet, modern society has its own features--amalgamation, so to speak, that means a majority of characteristics the society contains are commixed into major cities.
Lots of societies, both Greek civilization and eastern Chinese culture, no matter how resplendent they were, came into being in wold. Many metropolises we know today are not origins. As the elementary origin of character of a certain society, we cannot overlook those regions. Chinese society, for example, derived from central section where are not still major areas of China, and comprising only seldom metropolises. In spite of a few major cities, we are able to learn fundamental characteristics there on which all other characters of China stand. But this primitive character can not generalize all attributes, researchers must discover new forms of characteristics.
With the increasing extent of socialization, these major cities congregate different kinds of people from various occupations, nations and classes. Through metropolis of a society, you can really realize a society comprehensively. Beijing, for instance, the capital of China, built more than 500 years ago, is a city of great palaces, temples, and also downtown. People would realize both the aspect of antiquity, one of the most important features, via the Great Wall and the character of modernism, another one, through Changan avenue. Consequently, major city is absolutely the significance we need to study.
In fact, it is better for people to study by combining these regions. It will help us, to a certain extent, thoroughly understand the most important characters. Metropolises in which more than thousands people live can embody the vital traits of society-----modernism or finance; suburbs, or even some remote areas, especially pristine regions, remain more significant cultural features. Cairo, as a metropolis, contains both. In this city, people could perceive its modernism when live in the center of it. Also, travelers can realize its culture when visit pyramids which stand on the suburb of Cairo.
To sum up, without major cities, we are difficult to understand one of the most characteristics--modernism. Without original areas, people cannot realize another trait--culture. Hence, in order to comprehend the most important characteristics, we have to combine the study from these areas. |
