something more than GMAT column:

Our daily diet supplies the essential nutrients we need, which can’t be made by the body. These nutrients are: carbohydrates, fat, protein, which are called macronutrients, and vitamins and minerals, which are known as micronutrients. Micronutrients are energy-yield nutrients, and required in larger amounts than that of micronutrients.

Food energies expressed in kilocalories. A calorie is the amount of hear required to raise the temperature of a gram of water by 1 C.

1g carbohydrate = 4 calories

1g fat = 9 calories

1g alcohol = 7 calories

1g protein = 4 calories

What astonished me is I thought that protein should provide more calories than carbohydrate, but it’s not. So maybe those MMs who are on diet could try more carbohydrates instead of fat and some amount of the proteins. Too many proteins won’t be absorbed by our body, thus will be ejected through urine, so do the vitamins. But note that too much Vitamin A, D and K may store in our liver and fat cells to a toxic level. Vitamin C can facilitate iron absorption, and vitamin d improves calcium absorption. I think that’s the reason that there’s a type of milk with vitamin D. We are told that drink milk can help us build our bones, but without vitamin D, the effect will be minor.

Another thing more MMs will interest in is the antioxidant vitamins. What makes us age every day, every year? Because of the free radicals in our body that can damage cells throughout the body. When our body exposed to oxygen or a toxin, such as smoke, it forms free radicals. I heard there’s a new product named “OPC-3” which is basically an antioxidant can expel the excess free radicals from our body. I don’t know whether it’s better than intake antioxidants from our daily diet. So what kind of foods contains antioxidants? Foods rich in vitamin C and E, such as lemon, grape skin, etc. can help us gain more antioxidants. Maybe that’s the reason why MMs eat a lot of fruits are prettier. One American friend said that to his knowledge, the best antioxidant is Chinese green tea. Hehe, I believe so.

Ok. Too much. More than enough le. I’ll stop here. See what’s interesting things I'll find next time.

173. Researchers have found that when very overweight people, who tend to have relatively low metabolic rates, lose weight primarily through dieting, their metabolisms generally remain unchanged. They will thus burn significantly fewer calories at the new weight than do people whose weight is normally at that level. Such newly thin persons will, therefore, ultimately regain weight until their body size again matches their metabolic rate.

The conclusion of the argument above depends on which of the following assumptions?

  1. Relatively few very overweight people who have dieted down to a new weight tend to continue to consume substantially fewer calories than do people whose normal weight is at that level.

  2. The metabolisms of people who are usually not overweight are much more able to vary than the metabolisms of people who have been very overweight.

  3. The amount of calories that a person usually burns in a day is determined more by the amount that is consumed that day than by the current weight of the individual.

  4. Researchers have not yet determined whether the metabolic rates of formerly very overweight individuals can be accelerated by means of chemical agents.

  5. Because of the constancy of their metabolic rates, people who are at their usual weight normally have as much difficulty gaining weight as they do losing it.
