TPO 23 In today's world, it is more important to work quickly and risk making mistakes than to work slowly and make sure that everything is corret.
Whether efficiency is the primary concern in our daily life has been a heated controversy in contemporary society. Some people maintain that it is extremely important to keep a high efficiency, even this risks making mistakes. While others insist that it is irrational to pursue efficiency without making sure everything is on the right track. As far as I am concerned, it is too absolute to simply come to the conclusion that working quickly is or is not more important than working slowly, because it depends on specific circumstances.
On one hand, when it comes to people’s life and safety, it could never be wrong to take it easy and make sure that everything is correct. In other words, how many times have you heard the news reporting medical accidents such as gloves or scalpels left in a patient's body; how many times have you been told that children got sick because of the not-fully-processed food; how many times have you read from the newspaper that cars are recalled because of their lack of tiny screws. I bet most of you cannot even number. In fact, if doctors do not hurry to vacate the OR for her/his next patient; if food producers take their time and wait patiently for the timer of the oven; if the manufacturers work a little bit slower than they usually do, then none of this would ever happen.
On the other hand, for certain industry, efficiency means bigger market share, obvious increase in output, and most importantly, money. Imagine what will happen if a computer company cannot apply the new operating system to its products before most of its competitors. The answer seems pretty obvious. It will not only suffer a great loss, but also lose a large proportion of its potential customers as they will gradually attract to the fancy products of its contestant. In this case, productivity and efficiency mean everything and mistakes are tolerable as long as the company makes it up later by providing thoughtful after-sale services. Therefore, it is obvious that in situations like this, nothing can be more important than working quickly.
In conclusion, there is no doubt that both efficiency and quality are indispensible. But who comes first and who is more important? It depends. |
