Issue 82 97 100 124 Colleges and universities should require their students to spend at least one semester studying in a foreign country.

With the globally developing economy and science in today’s society, education in the area of multi-culture has been believed to be a significant factor that will keep the competitive development in the world. I agree with the author that learning about another culture is beneficial a student. However, to require all students to spend at least one semester in another country is not the only way of learning about another culture, and might be unrealistic.

To begin with, getting to know about different cultures is a good way for a student to learn to be open-minded. Understanding various cultures and life styles may free their minds and spirits. Living in a multi-culture country, an American student is very possibly surrounds by friends from different cultures such as Mexico, India, Asia and so on. Once he gets to know more about the friends’ traditional customs, he will probably give more respects to their life styles, or even adopt some to his own life, such as eating more healthy food like Asian people. Moreover, since the world is getting smaller and smaller, getting to know the current economic and scientific situation in another country could effectively prepare students for their future career planning. For example, a student who goes to Mexico may find that many schools are desperately in need of English teachers, so he would start to consider starting an educational career after graduation. A student, whose major is computer science, may consider working in an advanced smart phones company such as Apple Tech in the future when he finds that using iphones is such a prevailing fashion among white collars in China that the potential market of smart phones is huge.

As has discussed above, it must be a great eye-opening experience if a student could actually spend some time studying in another country to experience the authentic culture. However, in most of the cases, it is unrealistic to require all students to stay in a foreign country for at least one semester. Firstly, studying in another country usually costs a large amount of money which is often hard for a college student or his family to afford. Even if the colleges or universities could support some students to study abroad, it will be a challenge to support all the students. Secondly, since they would have to stay there for at least one semester, other than financial concern, students are also required to be physically and mentally ready to go abroad, which cannot be achieved in a short time to some of the students. For example, before going to an Africa country, students need to know that there might be epidemic diseases which would be a risk for them to live there for the whole semester; going to a developing country such as China, they would have to live in dirtier air due to the large number of factories around the cities, and their immune system might be not so used to the air condition so that they would probably get sick very easily. In addition, the habit of eating, communicating and the language issue could also be big challenges to some students. Thus, going to study in another country is not like a “grab and go” thing as buying fast food. All the issues mentioned above need to be well considered before they go.

Besides going to a foreign country, there are many other effective ways to learn a foreign culture on the base of myriad cultural resources and advanced technology. For example, students can always take Spanish classes to know the Hispanic language and some cultures reflected in the language. Students who are interested in European architectures can always read books or watch videos on the subject. Friends or classmates living around could also be used as learning resources. Thus, even though it might be beneficial, colleges and universities do not necessarily send students to study in a foreign country.

In sum, students should be required to learn about other cultures in this globally developing world, so as to be more open-minded and prepared to the future career. Admittedly, it will be helpful to actually go to another country to experience a specific culture, yet learning abroad is not the only way to do so. Different ways of learning should be adopted according to the realities.
