8. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Television has destroyed communication among friends and family. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion. Television, since its birth in last century, has been accompanying with controversies about its contents and its influence to people's life. Since watching TV is quite time-consuming, a multitude of people claim that watching TV has occupied lots of time which is supposed to be spent on chatting, resulting in the lack of communication among family members and friends. Even though it is obvious that people spend large amount of time on watching television, the assertion that the time of communication among family members and friends declined because of watching TV is ill-founded. To begin with, the posed statement implicitly assumes that, when people choose to do other things rather than to watch TV, the time saved would be utilized to talk and chat, therefore strengthen the relationship between family and friends. However, the assumption is totally mistaken. Our experience and observation inform us that, even if people do not choose to watch TV, it cannot be guaranteed that they would talk to others. Some behaviors undertaken in non-TV time such as reading, playing computer games and even sleeping, comparing to watching TV, do not increase communication as well. Conversely, watching TV, to some degree, is a comparatively desirable way to promote communication with family members and friends for people sitting together in the living room could have time to share experiences in the workplace and anecdotes that they have encountered in life when they are watching TV. In some sense, by way of watching TV, the chances of communicating with each other increase.
Furthermore, contents involved in some certain TV programs might be favorable topics of discussion among people. Two family members interested in the political events, for instance, are concentrating the presidency debate between two candidates. Sitting in front of the TV and supporting differently respective candidate, they could talk about the distinct policies proposed by the two candidates and the results of the policies and they could even debate intensively about the policy inclination of the candidates due to the different political stands. No matter what the consequence of the discussion or the debate is, owning to the TV program, the communication between the two family members is improved.
To conclude, it is appropriate to claim that not only does watching TV not inhibit the communication among people, but also it increases the opportunities to communicate among family and friends because the valuable time when family member are watching TV gives rise to the precious opportunities to get together and talk to each other and because the contents in some TV programs provide the topics of discussion among family members and friends, thus making the relationship more harmonious. |
