我认为选B，解释如下，感觉还是比较清晰的。不过我也是做了好多题才积累一点心得，如果有写错请指正。

When drive-ins were at the height of their popularity in the late 1950s, some 4000 (4000省略drive-ins，属于实体可数名词而不是数量，要求平行) existed in the United States, but today there are (要求平行1) less than one-quarter that many.
A. there are less (实体可数名词要求fewer) than one-quarter that many
B. there are fewer (省略drive-ins，可以平行) than one-quarter as many (省略drive-ins as in 1950s，可以平行)
C. there are fewer (省略drive-ins，可以平行) than one-quarter of that amount (可数名词要求不能用amount，而用quantity什么的)
D. the number (1不平行) is less than one-quarter the amount (错误同C)
E. it (单复数错误，而且it只能指代some 4000 drive-ins，today的指代对象肯定不同了，属于错误指代) is less than one-quarter of that amount (amount继续错)
