A. there are less than one-quarter that many
B. there are fewer than one-quarter as many
C. there are fewer than one-quarter of that amount
D. the number is less than one-quarter the amount
E. it is less than one-quarter of that amount

less不修饰可数名词，用fewer，amount修饰不可数名词，因此选b

选B啥~后面补全就是as many drive-ins as there were in the late 1950s.q那个some 4000其实是4000 drive-ins ,前面的主干部分已经很完整，所以明确比较的对象应该是人数目，less修饰不可数错了啥，然后Amount修饰不可数，C里面are错了，而且that指代不明吖，E里面的it指代不明肯定错呀，我曾经也在D里面犹豫过，后来觉得the amount相较于b的话b解释得更清楚···个人见解~希望看看有什么别的对D的错误有补充的

B, A less 应该修饰不可数，C the amount 不可数，与there are不一致， D前面是4000 drive in，后不应该用the number, E it指代不明
