越障 05:05

Dr. JS has invented a pattern of boarding that can reduce the time boarding for airplanes.

Dr. S points out that there are two factors that prolong the procedure of boarding: one is waiting in the aisle for the preceding passengers to stow their suitcases; the other is reentering the aisle in order to spare room for passengers whose seats are by the window. --Dr. S 's method can reduce the time for the former process and eliminate the time wasted by the latter.

Dr. S's method:

1) let the passenger queue in the following order: first the passengers whose seats are at the rear of the plane of a certain side, say the left side; then the passengers whose seats are in the middle; lastly, the passengers who will sit in the front will stand in the end of the queue.

2) passengers who will sit in the other side (right side) of the plane queue to board after the people who will sit on the left side have already boarded.

Dr. S has his method experimented on a Boeing 75*. He tried both his method and the traditional method, which is that all passengers queue and board in a random order. The results are that the traditional way of boarding took almost 7 min while Dr. S's method took only half of the time.

For now, no airplane companies are using his method. Part of the reason is that the process is a little bit like herding sheep. However, Dr. S believes that there will be companies trying his method. He points out that every minute not flying can cost the airplane company 6(?) dollars. The average time spent every year for a company is about 1500 hrs(mins?), and thus those fees add up to a big amount (?) every year.

|
