看到很多愈发用扯到dash。。这是我今天在网上找到的一个小总结,个人觉得还不错。
Dashes:
The dash holds a special place in my heart. For me, it was that elusive punctuation mark which I often came across, but never attempted to use. After incorporating it into my writing, however, I found the dash quite useful.
First of all, a dash is not a hyphen. A hyphen connects certain compound words–the dash has no such function. Here is a list of uses of the dash:
1. To interrupt a sentence with an important, attention-grabbing phrase (make sure the clause that precedes the dash in independent): a). Time spent in prison can change your outlook–especially if you have a life sentence.
2. To set off interrupting elements within a sentence (serves the same function as commas, but provides emphasis). Just like with commas, make sure that, if you take out the phrase within dashes, the sentence still makes sense: a). It was apparent to me–after hours of deliberation–that I had made the wrong decision.
3. To introduce an explanation in the same way a colon would. Again, make sure the clause before the dash is independent: a). Jack was gentle, but persistent, with Carolyn–he would make her his wife.
The dash is used, for the most part, to give your sentence that little dramatic pause it needs to provide emphasis. Notice that, in comparison to the colon and the semicolon, the dash is pretty flexible with its usage. Just be sure to become comfortable with the dash; it should give you the least amount trouble on the exam. |
