What are students supposed to learn in college? The answers vary from independent thinking to the specific knowledge in one's major. To be concrete, it is still a matter of paradox between the grasp of ideas and definitions and the acquaintance of details. As far as I am concerned, to understand ideas and concepts is definitely of more vital importance. The reasons are discussed substantially as follows.
One of the crucial meanings of student life is to prepare for future occupations. It is often said that more than 80% of the knowledge learnt in school will be useless in their future work. That is to say, no matter how solid one's memory is and no matter how high the score one gains in a certain subject, only facts in books can never satisfy needs in working conditions. Once, I got a chance to have a conversation with one of my alumni who is working in citi-bank. He pointed out that the world especially the financial area is developing so fast that he had to keep on learning new financial instruments and newly born ideas almost every day. What he has been taught in college about stocks and bonds has transformed to the extent that he never imagined. Thus, he kindly told me that facts were of significant, but what is more helpful and influential in my future career is the method of learning.
What's more, ideas and concepts are basic theories that can never go out of date. With a good command of fundamental theories, one will have the ability to analyze current issues and make one's contributions to work. One of my favorite professors Mr Lu, who taught Financial Market, once said in class that when he selected college students for further graduate study, what he concentrated on is the ability of analysis more than a high score. It is not rare to see in China that only if a student works hard for one or two days to try to recite some pointed materials in the book, he or she will achieve an ideal score. A recent survey conducted by Cesco Corp. shows that most of the students with high scores in school life the corporation tracked performance no better than or even worse than some so called "bad students". In my perspective, the result of the survey clearly demonstrates the importance of understanding ideas and concepts.
Facts are indeed important, and can be a useful tool in understanding ideas and concepts. However, memories will fade away. Never can a pioneer follow one's footprints to succeed. In the 21st century, talents bear another responsibility of being innovative. It is innovation and creative thoughts that bring lots of companies back to life, rise lots of individual to fame, contribute nations to jump.
To sum up, in order to let ourselves competitive after graduating, we must learn to understand, to grasp the essential content behind any fact. As the saying once said by Li Kaifu, who is a famous entrepreneur in China, that "If one forgets everything learnt in college, what has left is what one is supposed to learn." |
