以前看这题的时候也有考虑过D选项，不过从来没有看到过but also可以单独使用。请NN确认。

有点困惑，不过clearing created farmland比较合理，clearing gave houses and furniture好像不太匹配，而farmland gave houses and furniture好像也不太匹配，或许furniture的概念比我们所理解的‘家具’要更广泛一点；但是，从it的角度，至少可以排除ADE，not only ... but also的角度排除D，剩下的只有B了。

In A, B, and E, the referent of the pronoun them is ambiguous; because them appears to be parallel to customers, the illogical suggestion is that the new telecommunications company has forced customers to offer competitive prices. Choices B and E may also be faulted for the improper insertion of it to refer redun­dantly to the new company. Finally, E is not parallel in verb tense with captured... has forced. Choice D does not main­tain parallelism, unnecessarily shifting from active (company not only has captured) to passive (but also these companies have been forced).

可是此but it also的意思不同于not only..but also 中的意思呀! 我觉得此例不具可比性!

but可以单独用。ETS支持的用法包括：

not only... but also

not only... but

但是not only.... 没有but also (或者but)肯定是错的；but xxx also也肯定是错的。实际上，ETS支持的语法比一般的语法书严格的多。

but also从没有见过单独出现过。我个人相信but also 当作“但也是”讲的时候，而非当作“而且”讲的时候，应该是合理的。Example:

I'm a good boy, but also a tough one.
