You are right.

Correlation and causation.

Two things happened together: 1) coffee consumption dropped; and 2) bad effects of coffee were publicized. Therefore, the author says that 2) caused 1) or "bad publicity of coffee led to the decrease in sale"!

Choice E) says that it is another reason - the price hike caused the drop in coffee consumtion. So E) provides an alternative explanation for 1) to happen. E) is a weakener.

D说的是其他产品的产量变化，似乎也是其他原因削弱了观点
可是D直接说了consumption的变化；E却只说了price，我们不能认为price导致consumption
同时原文的significant和E中的steadly不能对应。
我觉得还是D好。不过D容易被判定为无关比较。。。。

可是D直接说了consumption的变化；E却只说了price，我们不能认为price导致consumption

(E), of course the price affects the consumption, it provides an alternative cause for lower consumption.
(D) is irrelevant, since there is no guarantee that whole drinks market needs to keep stable. It is possible both drinks' consumptions increase in the same time.
(ps. steady: developing, growing, etc. gradually and in an even and regular way, it can make significance if the rate changes steady for ten years.)

问题是most，比较一下D和E
E:Coffee的产量降了导致价格涨了---->A。 价格涨了必然导致消费低嘛，这里说的只有coffee，而不是一种coffee，引入了一默许的hidden premise就是price必然导assumption下降。
D:fruit和caffeine free drink抢了市场----->A。直接竞争消费人群，导致coffee的assumption下降，更加的直接，相比E的话要合理。

所以还是选D，个人见解

有可能以前啥饮料都不喝的人，现在喝fruit juices and caffeine-free herbal teas，但是不喝咖啡。

而且即使作者想用D表达，fruit juices and caffeine-free herbal teas 的销量增加抢了咖啡的市场，也至少应该说个steadily吧，不然一点点增加对咖啡市场不会有什么威胁的。而且光说steadily也是不行的，至少应该拿fruit juices and caffeine-free herbal teas十年前后销量的份额和咖啡销量的份额对比一下吧。总之D太无关了。
