Wow. Big Cong! The only explanation is that LZ graduated from a top US university. Plus very strong recommendation letters.

You didn't specify the reason you were admitted. Everybody was admitted for a reason.Judging from your application list, you were either stupid (which I believe you are not) or had particular strength.

Sorry I read too quickly. You already said you studied in Australia.

To the poster: I am amazed at your application result given your average profile. Are you telling a story or the truth?

This further convinces me that the admissions are finicky and kind of a crapshoot. Let's take a look at the admissions requirements:

Transcripts: Are these a reliable indicator of a person's potential? It depends. Also, it is difficult to compare the rigor of academic study across schools and programs.

Recommendations: How much do they really say about an applicant's academic potential? Common sense tells us that they are not reliable in many cases.

Statement of purpose: Anyone can tell a story about her life and work.

GMAT/GRE: These are the shown to be a reliable predictor of success at graduate school. The question, though, is that for many programs these are not sufficiently weighted.

No wonder sometimes the professors complain that the students accepted turn out not to be as bright as their application credentials suggested initially. We anticipate changes brought to the admissions process.

I tend to believe that the Chinese admissions system based on exams is not without merits.

Given the other replies besides Columbia, assuming the information is true, there is another reason that LZ didn't specify. (perhaps extreme humility?)
