A perfect score on the GMAT is 800 points. A perfect grade point is considered to be a 4.0. At one time it was common practice to multiply the grade point by 200, causing an academic record to be equally weighted in total points (200*4.0=800) with the GMAT score. If your grade point was 3.4 and your score on the GMAT was a 520, multiplying your grade point by 200 would produce 680, which when added to your GMAT, would result in total score of 1,200. This score would then be compared against a standard established by the institution. If your 1,200 exceeded that standard, then you would be a prime candidate for an automatic admit. If your score fell below another standard, such as 1,100, then you would be prime candidate for rejection. This practice of generating “magical” admissions formulas is less prevalent today but nevertheless continues to be employed by some programs.
There is another way of viewing the role of the GMAT. In the formula approach just described, a higher GMAT score can partially offset a lower grade point. Conversely, a higher grade point can partially offset a lower GMAT score. For example, if your grade point was 2.8, then an impressive GMAT score of 640 would equal the 1,200 total points exemplifier earlier. A grade point of 3.5 combined with a score of 500 would also produce a total of 1,200 points. Of course, in instances of either the GMAT or grade point being much lower than would be expected given your high performance on the other measure, the committee will have questions about the reasons for the disparity.
