2011 Accounting PhD

chicago的问题是学生多，每年都有3个左右的人毕业，今年好像是4个，所以内部竞争就比较激烈，据说他们是让两个强的申请top学校，2个弱的申请一般的学校，所以skinner那两个学生flyout都不错，leuz那个就比较一般。其实leuz那个学生如果是别的top学校毕业的可能flyout也不错。所以如果能从chicago内部脱颖而出，到个好学校去当faculty那就是一定的了。如果不行，可能结果还不如从其他top学校毕业来的好。

其实chicago和老师合作的机会也是有的吧？年轻的老师都很productive。不知道stanford今年job market怎么样呢？还有stanford要做20个小时ra，chicago好像不用，第三四年是teach，这样感觉上有更多自己的时间支配。但是也有人说ra的话会和老师接触多一点，能学到更多东西。。。

我有很多人帮助我。我的ps都是老师和朋友们帮我改过的。暑假的时候用三个月的时间读了250篇accounting经典的paper。参加seminar。等等吧。很多东西是很难写在cd上的。我只大概说一下background，是怕大家问，不说的太具体，是因为申请真的因人而异，怕误导别人，认为只要做到了什么什么就怎样了。帖子只是想提供点面试和录取的信息而已，得益于cd不少，回报一下。

The problem is the culture. Chicago has quite a few young and productive faculty members, but they rarely co-author with PhD students. The culture there is that PhD students need to be independent thinkers. So, unless you are very creative so that the faculty members think the idea is worthwhile trying, they are not going to co-author with you because you are their RA. Stanford, because of the RA assignment, provides you with more opportunities to see what the faculty members are doing and might be easier for you to find ideas to work with faculty members.

Tilburg is very famous in the U.S., at least in the accounting field. Quite a few Tilburg accounting PhDs land jobs in such famous schools as Chicago and Michigan, so it might not be that very very normal. Also LZ might has done quite a lot research in accounting phD and his personal statement might be very good.
