Hey there! This is a common misconception, and yet another area where the admissions committees often will not tell you the full truth. To say that “it is better to be Chinese and apply from the US” is an overstatement. It is an oversimplification of the truth. In fact, schools would love it if you have traveled the world, and have been to the US. So if you apply from the US, this would indicate that you do have a more international background. Most likely, you are more comfortable being in the US, speaking with native US speakers, etc. But that does not mean that your chances are simply better if you apply from the US. Schools just want to know that you have a global outlook—and coming from the US, you will have an easier time proving that. But if you have spent time abroad, or in the US—and now you find yourself in China, you will be just fine. We work with countless Chinese people (in China!) every year, and they get into all the top schools in the world, including HBS, Stanford, and Wharton etc. There is no statistical advantage, from our dataset of clients each year, to being located in the US.
I hope this is helpful—and good luck!
