Admissions Requirements

Admissions Requirements

The Admissions Office pays personal attention to you. Our process is highly selective, and we strongly encourage you to apply early to ensure a more timely response from the Admissions Committee. Our goal is to recruit - and then develop - top talent.

What We Look For

For both Full-time MBA programs, we are looking for candidates:

  • From all backgrounds and undergraduate disciplines to ensure a broad range of specializations and interests
  • Who make a valuable contribution in the classroom, with demonstrated ability to excel, lead, learn and grow
  • Who have a strong undergraduate academic record and post-undergraduate, full-time work experience with demonstrated leadership abilities
  • With competitive scores on the GMAT and, for non-native English-speaking applicants, the TOEFL, Pearson Test of English (PTE), or IETLS
  • With the ability to contribute both in and outside of the classroom

In addition, we look for One-Year candidates who also have:

  • A degree in business or, depending on the university attended and coursework completed, economics. Applicants with strong quantitative backgrounds (such as engineering and math majors) who possess solid business experience may also qualify for this program, as determined on a case-by-case basis. In some instances, additional business coursework may be necessary to be considered for the program.
  • Focused work experience and clear direction about post-MBA goals.
Admission Requirements
Applicant Verification Process

Integrity is of one of our Core Values and, implicitly, an important characteristic of our application process. To guard against potential allegations that students may have provided inaccurate information about themselves or their backgrounds in their applications, all application credentials for deposited Full-time MBA candidates will be subject to an independent verification process. The student is responsible for the $70 fee associated with this process.

Transfer Policy

We do not accept transfer credit. Students in our Full-time programs are given the opportunity to take waiver exams for core courses. This does not shorten the overall length of the program, but it does allow those students to take more elective courses.

Current MBA Holders

If you have earned a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) degree in the United States, you are not eligible to enroll in a Goizueta Business School MBA Program. Exceptions to this policy will be considered on a rare case-by-case basis if the degree is considered not comparable to the academic and experiential content of Goizueta Business School's MBA Program.

Application Deadlines

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Applications received after the final deadline will be reviewed on a space available basis. Applications will not be reviewed until they are complete with all required materials including official test scores, recommendation letters, official transcripts, essays, resume and interview (where applicable). We encourage candidates who have submitted their on-line application to log into OPUS to verify materials received and to check their application status.   The Admissions Office cannot accommodate requests to verify materials received over the phone.

Application Deadlines
  • November 1, 2009 - Early Deadline
  • December 1, 2009* - Recommended International Deadline
  • February 1, 2010** - Scholarship and One-Year Program Deadline
  • March 1, 2010 - Final Deadline

* International applicants are encouraged to apply by December 1, 2009. However, applications received by the final program deadline will still be given complete consideration.

** All One-Year Program applicants and all those who wish to be considered for scholarships must submit the application and all materials  by February 1, 2010 to be given complete consideration.

Admission Decision

The Admissions Committee reserves the right to limit the size of the entering class, and all decisions are final. To reserve a place in the class, accepted students must submit a $1000 non refundable deposit that will be applied to the first semester's tuition. If waitlisted, we encourage students to contact our office to receive feedback on their application. Typically, we do not begin to review the waitlist until after our final deposit  deadline.

A variety of student loans are available for both domestic and international students.  Students can borrow up to the budgeted cost of attendance less any scholarships.  Some of these loans include:

  • Federal Stafford Loan

  • Private Loan
  • International Student Loan

For detailed information about student loans and how to apply please visit Emory’s Office of Financial Aid website.

Scholarships

The Admissions Committee awards scholarships from the Goizueta Business Fund for Excellence, our annual fund, based on academic achievement, quality of work experience, demonstrated leadership and extracurricular activities.  Scholarships typically range from partial to full tuition plus stipend.

All completed applications submitted by February 1, 2011, are eligible for scholarship consideration.  An application is considered complete when our office has received all materials, including transcripts and recommendations.  No separate application is required.  Scholarship recipients are notified at the time of admission decision.

Named Scholarships

Goizueta offers several prestigious named scholarships which provide assistance to select candidates.  These awards are funded by alumni, companies and organizations.

The University's most prestigious named scholarship, the Woodruff Fellowship, includes full tuition and fees and a $3,000 per year stipend guaranteed for the length of the Full-Time MBA program.

Robert W. Woodruff Fellowships
The Robert W. Woodruff Foundation is a charitable organization that supports education, health care, human services, economic development, art and culture, and the environment through grants. The foundation was established by Robert Woodruff, the long-time president of the Coca-Cola Company.

“I’m eternally grateful to the Woodruff foundation, and proud to be part of two impressive Atlanta legacies in Emory and Coca-Cola.  This Fellowship proves that the Goizueta admissions office truly practices what they preach, and that hard work really does pay off.”  Jennifer McDonald, Woodruff Fellow, MBA’10

Goizueta Fellowships
Roberto C. Goizueta established The Goizueta Foundation in 1992 to provide financial assistance to educational and charitable institutions. In creating The Goizueta Foundation, he sought to acknowledge his indebtedness to this country and to continue the commitment to philanthropic endeavors that has symbolized the leadership of The Coca-Cola Company for more than a century.

Dean's Scholarships
The Dean’s Scholarship is funded by The Goizueta Business Fund for Excellence and awarded to several outstanding candidates each year.  The award covers tuition for the course of study.

For more information on Goizueta’s named scholarships, please visit the Invest in Goizueta website.

Curriculum

Curriculum Overview

When our faculty redesigned the curriculum for our Two- and One-Year MBA programs, they created an academic program that is flexible enough to offer depth in your field of study, while providing the structure to integrate what you learn across disciplines.

Integrated Core

A strong business education is built on a solid foundation.. The required core courses are designed and sequenced to ensure you develop the critical skill sets you need at the right time. By the end of the first semester, Two-Year students will have completed all but one required course. Students in the One-Year Program will have completed all required courses by the end of the summer term.

Flexibility to Specialize

You begin to develop mastery when you dig deeply into your areas of interest. With a variety of electives to choose from, you will have the opportunity to tailor your learning experience in a way that allows you to master the skills you need to succeed.

Core Courses

The foundations of your MBA education start with these required courses. They ground you in the basics of business, and provide a framework for your continued work in your elective courses.

  • Data & Decision Analysis
  • Leading Organizations & Strategy
  • Economics
  • Finance
  • Marketing Management
  • Financial Reporting
  • Processes & Systems Management
Core Course Waivers

If you have a strong business or economics background, optional waiver exams are available. While the overall length of the MBA program does not change, passing waiver exams offers you the freedom substitute core courses with electives – offering greater customization for your desired career path.

Management Practice

The unique course, entitled Management Practice, provides you the opportunity to develop and practice a crucial managerial ability: solving a business problem with ambiguous or less than perfect information at one's disposal. This course is a vehicle for strengthening the links to practice real integration across each academic discipline. It will help you build the skills to frame problems and find the data you need to analyze a situation and make a supported, timely decision.

Professional Communication & Professional Development

The best business leaders are great communicators and consummate professionals. The Professional Communication and Professional Development courses provide you with guidance and practice in the "soft" skill areas that recruiters seek out in the MBA candidates they hire.

In the Professional Communication course, you will have focused opportunities to practice your presentation skills, persuasive speaking, and leading and facilitating teams. Through the Professional Development course, you will learn the skills you need to effectively showcase your talents in interviews, in networking opportunities and in your everyday business interactions.

Leadership Development

Leader development at Goizueta is not a series of discrete events, but a coherent process of individual development and growth over time.

Course Options

At Goizueta, we recognize you as an individual, which is why we offer our students a variety of options to tailor coursework to fit their unique career goals. Because of our intimate, educational community, classes are small and faculty and students work closely. This also means we can be flexible, giving you the opportunity to design a course of study to best suit you. Each concentration encompasses a range of core classes and electives, and students have the opportunity to further customize their coursework through directed studies with faculty to courses with other Emory institutions to study abroad opportunities.

Concentrations & Electives

In response to the dynamic business world, Goizueta offers 23 different concentrations – within six academic areas – in both established and emerging topics. Electives provide students the opportunity to pursue specific areas of study beneficial to a particular career.

One-Year MBA students will choose 10 electives during their program. Two-Year MBA students will select 13 electives during their program, including four prior to the summer internship, therefore maximizing the return from the internship experience. Directed Study

Because Goizueta is an intimate learning community, you can work closely with faculty, and customize your MBA to fit your goals. If you have a specific interest in a topic that isn’t taught in one of your courses, you can create your own course under the Directed Study option. You develop your idea for a directed study, propose the project, and partner with a faculty member to complete your work.

Through the directed study option, you work collaboratively with experienced faculty and learn how to transform abstract theoretical questions into workable projects, publishable in major journals. Through this interaction, you learn the research norms and values that will guide you through today’s global business landscape.

Directed Study gives you the freedom to tailor your learning experience to your goals.

Internships

The CMC takes a holistic approach in preparing students for their summer internship search. Before students arrive on campus they are surveyed to provide the CMC with information on industry, company and functional preferences. This information is then used to help shape our corporate outreach and student preparation strategies. Once students arrive on campus preparation begins through seminars, conferences, corporate visits, peer groups, counseling, etc. After rigorous preparation students participate in interviews both on and off campus and we are proud to say that for the last six years we have had a 100% placement rate for internships.

"Real-world" experience

Hear what a previous student says about her internship experience:

"Prior to coming to Goizueta, I was employed at Kenneth Cole because I wanted to work in the fashion industry. So I was thrilled when I obtained an internship at Revlon in New York City, allowing me to continue with my passion for this business. During my time there, I began to understand the undeniable value of these leadership, communication, and presentation skills.

We also participated in a lunch series with members of Revlon's senior management. One after another, when probed to give advice on what they wish they had known right out of business school, each confirmed how important communication and leadership skills are. Fortunately, Goizueta already knows this and makes it a priority to instill each of us with this knowledge. As I return to work full-time in New York for L'Oreal, I know I have the confidence and skill sets I need to ensure my success in today's challenging business world."
