10 seems like a lot. I would say 5 is a more manageable number, for both you and your recommenders.

Like jelt2359 said, anything more than 5 is gonna be hard to manage. Why do you wanna apply for 10 or 20?

I would recommend to have a tiered approach, meaning pick 1-2 schools that are slightly out of your reach, pick 2-3 schools within your reach, and probably 1-2 schools that are considered safe choice for you. That should add up somewhere 4-7 schools. The way I see it, if you can get into a school ranked No. 6-10, you probably can get into most of No.6-10 schools. So might as well just apply to the ones you'd love to commit.
