[求助] PhD 4/15 接受奖学金后反悔后果？

请过来人帮忙！我被一所2nd tier学校的phd入取了，除学费全免以外只给$14,000 一年的fellowship stipend。另外更想去的学校要在五月中旬才可以确定结果。

如果我在4/15接受了二类学校的offer，五月份反悔了，后果会怎样？请帮帮忙！因为这二类学校在生活费用很高的大城市，$14,000的助学金是肯定不够的。我真的很想去的学校要我月中旬才能确定位置。好苦恼！

14,000 not enough? I am sorry if I sound rude. even you live in NYC or California, you can even have some money left to send back to China.

Not to be rude, but I live in NYC right now. If you want to live in a place where you can still have the quietness and safety to concentrate on study, the rent alone will be at least $450.00 to $500.00. (Even if living in Queens or Brooklyn. Manhattan is way off the league). Then there comes food, transportation, health insurance, communication(which include telephone, internet connection), daily supply. If you plan to have a car, then you will probably in debt for at least $250.00 per month for a $1000.00 monthly income. All these costs are just minimum calculation, which does not include clothing, technology hardware, or any form of entertainment. That is not a desirable position to be in if you are a PhD student, who need absolute 100% concentration and will not be able to have any extra income.

To give you just a little bit of example, in NYC, you have to pay at least $26.00 per month for local phone bill. If you want to be a PhD student, you need to have a cell phone to stay reachable, which will be about $50.00 per month for basic plan. (Without local phone line, your connections to China long distance phone calls will be in very bad reception with cell phone, and not to mention have to buy special phone cards). Minimum transportation cost (living without car) is $75 per month for monthly unlimited transportation. You will need broadband internet connection for research purposes, which will add another $45.00 per month. These little costs just add up to be unbelievable amount, so don't count that $14000 is enough. The school I will be studying does not have dormitory.

I hope all friends and applicants in China have realistic expections regarding living costs in the United States. Unlike small towns, living in large US cities does cost a lot.

It's true that living in big cities does cost more, although don't like the tone. $14000 is enough for me to survive whatsoever.

My suggestion is take the 14K offer and if the diserable school give you an offer in the mid May, try to negotiate with it and transfer to that school next year. the maximum cost for this strategy is no more than 8K if you study in NY. By the way, although I did not live in NY currently, but I still think you may find a cheaper phone or cell phone company anyway. that price is way too high. the house rental is acceptable.

the cost of living in the states does vary from city to city. for example, living in Rochester of NY is more than half cheaper than living in Los Angels of California. you can check how much more money you have to contribute by going to the following web site: http://www.monstermoving.monster.com/Find_A_Place/Calculators/SalaryCalc/index.asp

by the way, do your concertration can provide you some opportunities in the summer for intern. you can make some money. whatever decision you made eventually. try your best not to increase your own benefits at the cost of others, especially other sponsors who provide you with opportunity to materialize your dream. good luck.

如果4.15后反悔,结果就是:

所有签了4.15协议的学校都有义务(责任?)拒你如果你反悔的这个学校提出异议的话.据我所知,签了这个协议的学校还真不少(好象哪个网站可以查到)

免学费加14,000应该不错呀.我听说刘亦婷在哈佛也只是免学费.(住宿费?)生活费及零用也要靠在学校做辅导员来挣.

其实最可靠的办法就是去问你要去的学校的学长(第一手资料!),住宿是什么行情(这个大头).至于吃,穿,还是车什么的应该问题不大.

一直看到“4.15“协议，具体是什么内容啊？是只适用于PHD，还是PHD，MBA，MASTER都受约束。
