This is a good one.

D. Minivans, carrying as many as seven passengers, compared with most sport utility vehicles, cost less,

D. Noun,modifer, modifer, verb (both modifiers modify Minivans, and in GMAT, this form is incorrect)
Also, another way to look at D is that "compared with most sport utility vehicles" modifies passengers, no good.
Also, D changes the meaning.  It's kind of saying that *all* minivans, in general, can carry 7 passengers, and comparing SUV with minivans of 7 passengers.

A is good because if you break it down, you will see two separate thoughts: Minivans carry as many as seven passengers.  Minivans, compared with most SUV, cost less, blahblahblah.
