可是我觉得句子的意思是That the stress patterns (girls experience) result in depression are more likely than that the stress patterns (boys experience).
我觉得stress是不能在男生和女生之间来比较谁more likely..., 我觉得比较的是在导致depression方面谁more likely...

that boys experience [这用了倒装语序, 还原应该是( than the patterns of stress that boys experience are )]
中文意思: (女孩们所受到的)压力形式比(男孩们所受到的)压力形式更有可能会导致人的沮丧.
这里强调的是 可能性~  the patterns of stress are likely to result in...  More 用来比较可能性大小

而我认真想了楼主的思考方式, That the stress patterns (girls experience) result in depression
are more likely than that the stress patterns (boys experience).  其实你已经把整句意思理解错了.
你比较的不是可能性, 而是怎样会导致人的沮丧.  用下面一段描述的句子,能更好地反映你的理解:

That the stress patterns (girls experience) result more easily in depression than that the stress patterns (boys experience) do.  

你把 result 一词作为了整句的谓语动词. 比较的侧重点在于容易不容易.(可能用中文表达的不是太清晰,但是用英文,相信你一看就懂吧.) 请楼主再琢磨琢磨其中的区别.
