Yeah, I live in houston. This is a pretty good place to live.
Actually the living expense is pretty low here. If you do not have much
desire for metropolitan life, it is a pretty good place to live. You
may go to other great places out there in the east like New York or
Boston, or in the west like LA, but the living expense is high. You may
afford a car in Houston since the gas is cheap and parking is cheap or
free. When if you have some free time, you can always go fishing or get
some sun bath on the Galveston Beach which is 40 miles away. Well, I've
talked too much about the life style...

About the living expense:     Apartments 3 miles from Rice and
Medical center, one bedroom: 500-600$ (around 50squarem), two bedroom:
700-800$.     you can always find cheaper apartments if you'd like to
share an apartment with someone.

150-250$/month for food. Transportation: shuttles direct to the campus.
30$/month(my wife's school buys the shuttle pass for them, i don't know
if rice would do that).

About the school:

Rice's academic reputation is great in Southern states. The campus is
beautiful and new building of Jesse jones Bschool     is amazing.
There are many great companies around here and it is easy for Rice's
business students to find interns. You don't have to worry about the
quality of the program. The class size is small, you have bunch of
opportunities to communicate with professors if you want to. it is very
important for us chinese students because we tend to be less
aggressive.

I have to say that rice's tuition is higher than many other great
schools. I don' t know the exact amount. A student in a top ten bschool
said that I should not go to Rice because it is too expensive. But my
wife is here in Houston. This fact added much weight to my decision.
You guys need to consider much more than I do.     Personally I love
this school and this place, I would trade with no other schools except
the top 10.

Sure, such kind of things always happen.     even grads from top ten
are not guaranteed a job offer upon graduation.     don't let your
hope high if you dream of going somewhere just by an mba diploma. MBA
is a job training, your pre-mba job experience play an important part
in job hunting, too.

rice has very good reputation in South, specially in Texas. That's true. But it is a local school. don't tell me something like "harvard of South". your target job market    may be around this area.

if you spend 1,000,000 rmb on this school without better chance for a job, rethink its ROI. IF you has to go back china, how many people know its name?

BTW, RICE is an interest name though, in china    you may spend some time to explain this school has NO any relationship with farming or agricutrue. Just kidding.

Hi, nirvanas, thank u so much for your useful information!

According your information, the living expense in Houston will be 8000$ one year, right?

The tuition of Rice MBA program is about 30k$ one year, so the total cost will be 40k$, not far higher than many other US schools?

I heard that it very difficult for Chinese applicants get some kinds of financial aids from Rice? Right? Do you get some scholarship from Rice, how will u afford such high cost?

Do u know the job placement situation for Rice MBA program, especially those Chinese students? Can they find job in Texas? Or all come back to China?

Think u for u help again? I really have trouble to make the decision.

What is the specific reason for your friend not to get a job interview in China?

I just wonder maybe his requirement is too high? How is your friend at present? Still no job?
