some science phds have taken some phd econ classes before turning to the finance direction.   but in the long run, this background is not so welcomed as before,  since their math or coding skills might not be significantly better.
RLs and luck are very important.

1.forget about rochestor, which has a low survive rate.
2.Also forget about MIT, U CHICAGIO, if u don't have outstanding background, as Darice suggested. I think Whartion is a friendly school, u may want to try it.
3. Ur aim is a little bit high as u said. u should diversify ur portfolio
4. keep connection with the prof who wants u to be her phd, which gives u the back up.
5. If ur aim is not an excellent researcher and just want to make a living with a decent salary, working in industry should be defenitely ur choice.
Good luck

Thanks very much for your comment! I am gonna drop MIT and rochester, and add two 2nd or 3rd tier schools. BTW, rochester really is annoying, they do not accept GRE taking from China. Although, it's not a big deal for applicants who take GMAT.

have you checked whether ASU will recruit PhD student this year?

also, you might want to try more private universities in your 2nd and 3rd tiers.

hi, neo. I did not check with ASU, but I assume they are recruiting since there are detailed guidelines on their website. Shall I contact every school to make sure they are recruiting?

If you could give me some recommendations of private schools in 2nd and 3rd tiers, it would be very much appreciated.

ASU is known to have been hit pretty hard by the financial crisis...so you might want to check that

You can take a look at WUSTL. My impression is that they prefer quant people. Also, take a look at Emory. It is a pretty new program and most prof. there are asset pricing guys (although they hired an AP this year who does corp. finance..).

You better try a few more because it give you more chances.
You have to write at least one research proposal anyway.

You can try the top schools if you research proposal is innovative and good enough. You must have pretty much idea of who is doing what in the field, try to have some understanding of each professor's specialism and talk to them to find out. It can be some academic discussion not immediately related to doctoral positions.

Some professional qualification can compensate the deficiency of not coming from a very top school and also where's the GMAT...

If Waterloo is funding you, you have pleny of time...

and Good Luck.
