The USC neighborhood is pretty bad (okay, it's VERY bad). Everyweek, there's robery and break in happen. The campus security sends out warnings, and updates every week, and there's always something happening late at night near the campus. (Which is probably why the campus is gated)
So I'd actually recommend staying in areas north from the campus. Some downtown apt are pretty good, but rather pricey. Otherwise, some people stays in Alhambra (40min drive with traffic), and drive to school everyday. Alhambra area has a lot of chinese population, and chinese food. Much cheaper and fairly safe.
Also, parking is a problem in USC too. Make sure you get on the parking permit purchase ASAP. Parking lot X is probably best location wise for B-school, but it's considered on-campus. So if you want to save money, park at the parking structure (forgot the name, but it's slightly cheaper).
