weaken?

Baking for winter holidays is a tradition that may have a sound
medical basis (GENERALIZATION). In midwinter, when days are short, many
people suffer from a specific type of seasonal depression caused by
lack of sunlight (FACT). Carbohydrates, both sugars and starches, boost
the brain's levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that improves the
mood (EVIDENCE). In this respect, carbohydrates act on the brain in the
same way as some antidepressants (MID-CONCLUSION). Thus, eating holiday
cookies may provide an effective form of self-prescribed medication
(CONCLUSION).

would you agree with the functioins enclosed in teh brackets?

Hereafter is an choose which is supposed to weaken the conclusion. Can anybody explain why it weakens? thanks

没有明白什么意思,再解释一下削弱是从何而来吗?谢谢!

此题应该是黄皮书上册3-I-15题。原题如下:

Baking for winter holidays is a tradition that may have a sound medical basis. In midwinter, when days are short, many people suffer from a specific type of seasonal depression caused by lack of sunlight. Carbohydrates, both sugars and starches, boost the brain's levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that improve the mood. In this respect, carbonhydrates act on the brain in the same way as some antidepressants. Thus, eating holiday cookies may provide an effective form of self-prescribed medication.

Which one of the following can be properly inferred from the passage?
(A) Seasonal depression is one of the most easily treated forms of depression.
(B) Lack of sunlight lowers the level of serotonin in the brain.
(C) People are more likely to be depressed in midwinter than at other times of the year.
(D) Some antidepressants act by changing the brain's level of serotonin.
(E) Raising the level of neurotransmitters in the brain effectively relieves depression.

sorry, i posted teh wrong stuff.

can you think that the following choices can weaken the conclusion?

C, People who suffer
from depression don’t drink enough water. When they eat cookies, people
normally need to drink large volume of water, which significantly improve the
mood..

D, Antidepressants cure
the depression for the whole winter, but eating holiday cookies can only be
effective, if any, for several hours until people in depression are hungry.

E, Eating too many cookies may have
countereffectiveness on reducing depression. However, people who suffer
depression do not how many they should eat to keep the effectiveness

I think only E can weaken the argument, since (C) talks about some other aspects of eating cookie which can improve mood but fail to undermine any effectiveness of the original reasoning...(D) tunes in how much effective in stead of whether or not, thus makes it go beyond the scope.

(E) puts some conditions on what make eating cookies good for mood, thus discount the original effectiveness.

我觉得是C, C提供了一个不同的解释。是饮水,而不是吃cookie,帮着减轻depression。

E不对,因为原文并没有程度。所以无法从程度上削弱。
