加 盟 长 江 / Joining CKGSB
一直以来我始终相信,我最终将回到我的祖国并投入到祖国快速增长的管理教育事业中。在美国生活了19年后,我于今年4月终于决定回国。在中国所有的商学院中,我毫不犹豫地选择了加入长江商学院,因为我相信,长江商学院最有可能成为中国的世界级商学院。
I always knew that I would eventually come back to my home country to participate in China’s exciting growth in business education. After living in the US for nineteen years, I finally made the decision to come back in April this year. Among all the business schools in China, I chose to join CKGSB without hesitation. My choice was based on my belief that Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business (CKGSB) has the best chance to be a world-class business school in China.
在中国什么样的商学院可以称为世界级的呢?在我看来,最重要的标准是它的教授群体不仅在国际商业学术研究方面,而且在中国商业问题方面都是被高度承认的专家。一个顶级商学院的首要使命是通过学术研究产生新的管理思想和管理知识,并通过教学提供其学生宝贵的学习经历。管理知识是有两面性的。一部分管理知识是国际所通用的;而另外一些管理知识,是具体针对于某个国家或某种环境的,这是管理学与数学物理等世界通用型学科的重大区别之一。只有那些中西贯通,也就是对国际通用的管理原则及中国国情都有着深刻理解的教授才能针对中国具体管理问题研究出有深度的新思想,并满足中国管理教育市场的不断增长的需求。这种需求既来自于管理日益全球化的中国企业的高层管理者,也来自于对于中国市场有兴趣的跨国企业的高层管理者。
What kind of Chinese business schools can claim themselves to be world-class? In my view, the most important criterion for a world-class business school is that its professors must be highly recognized experts both in international business academic research and in China-related business issues. The central mission of a top business school should be to generate new ideas and new knowledge on business management through research, and to provide its students a valuable educational experience through teaching. There are two sides to management knowledge. Some management knowledge is valid --- and shared --- globally; and some management knowledge, unlike in fields such as mathematics and physics, is country-specific or environment-specific. Only professors who have a deep understanding of both types of knowledge can generate new and deep ideas about management issues in China, and to meet the increasing demand in China’s business education market --- both for Chinese executives who need to manage in an increasingly global economy, and for international executives with interest in China.
我们建立一支世界级教授团队的策略是在世界范围内寻找在一流商学院有丰富的研究教学经验的教授,并把他们吸引到长江商学院长驻。通过在国外多年刻苦的学术研究和大量的针对公司的咨询实践,这些教授对国际管理实践有着深刻的理解。而通过长驻中国,这些教授从国际视角对中国商业问题的理解也不断深入。我们相信这是发展一支学贯中西的世界级教授队伍的唯一可行的途径。
CKGSB’s strategy of building its faculty team is to identify world-class professors with extensive research and teaching experience at top-tier business schools around the world, and to attract them to join us permanently. These professors have a deep understanding of international management practice not only through many years of rigorous academic research, but also through extensive consulting practice and executive teaching. By staying in China permanently, they develop an understanding of China-related business issues at a deep level from an international perspective. We believe that this is the only feasible strategy that can develop a world-class faculty team with expertise in global as well as China-related business issues.

Attracting top scholars from around the world is not easy. In this regard, by far, CKGSB is one of the most successful among business schools in Asia. Our professors have had research and teaching experience at top schools like Wharton, Stanford, Yale, University of Chicago, INSEAD, UC Berkeley, UCLA, Carnegie Mellon, University of British Columbia, University of North Carolina, Boston University, and top business schools in Hong Kong and Singapore, etc. Many of our professors, e.g., XIANG Bing, Larry LANG, ZENG Ming, QI Daqing, have already developed great expertise in China-related business issues. Others are developing ambitious research programs on China-related issues. The exceptional strength of our existing faculty team is one of the important reasons that I joined CKGSB.

Why has CKGSB been successful in attracting top Chinese scholars from around the world? The most important reason is that, as an independent business school, our governance philosophy is that our faculty team together acts as the decision maker. This system, in general, supports good decision making, and in particular ensures the quality of recruitment of all future faculty members. Of course, the generous support of the Li Ka-Shing Foundation also made it possible for CKGSB to provide the necessary research and teaching environment for world-class scholars.

Another key criterion for a top business school is the quality of its student body --- both in individual quality and in network strength. After all, one of the important reasons that students enroll in business schools is to join a strong network for collaboration and friendship. Here again, CKGSB’s unique philosophy and culture can play an important role. First, world-class professors are more likely to attract high-quality students. Secondly, permanent faculty members have more incentive to be dedicated to their teaching, which leads to a more valuable and pleasant learning experience for all students. Permanent faculty members can also serve as important nodes in the network of all CKGSB students of different programs and different years. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, CKGSB’s unique culture of promoting social responsibility and contribution to society serves as a powerful uniting force among all of its students, faculty, and administrative staff. For these reasons, over merely two years, CKGSB has enjoyed great success both in attracting high-quality students and in building a very cohesive network among them.

One concern that I frequently hear of is that, because of its short history, CKGSB does not yet have an extensive network of students. My view is that the strength of a network comes not from its large size, but rather from its cohesiveness. Three years ago, the students and alumni of Stanford Business School, where I have been teaching for the last six years, overwhelmingly supported the decision to keep the size of its MBA students at 360 per year, rather than to increase the size to the typical level of around 800 per year (as in other top schools such as Harvard and Wharton). The reason is that Stanford students have always formed a very cohesive network exactly because the size is small and intimate. In comparison, students at University of Chicago Business School, where I taught for two years, do not have as strong a network as in Stanford, in part because the student size at Chicago is so large that students feel that they have an excuse to not get to know fellow students.

Based on my own observation, among all of the students that I have taught over the years in the US, Japan, and China, the EMBA and MBA students at CKGSB are the most cohesive. Our philosophy, our culture, and our entrepreneurism in business education have instilled in all of our students, faculty, and staff a sense of ownership. We not only feel that we belong to CKGSB, we also feel that CKGSB belongs to us. This spirit makes CKGSB a truly unique institution.
最近,我不断地把我的一些新感受告诉给我的朋友和家人。在今年3,4月份当我考虑加入长江商学院的时候,我更关注的是这所学院的将来,它的教授团队,员工和学员的质量,以及它的学术研究和教学环境。而在长江商学院工作一个多月以后,我现在深深感受到这是一份能够让我激情投入的工作。我们当中的许多人觉得我们实际上是在为一个伟大的事业在工作 --- 我们正在努力为中国建立一所世界级的商学院。中国经济在世界经济中的影响越来越大,中国需要,而且必须需要一所或者更多的世界级商学院来培养中国未来的商界领袖。为什么我们不应该是那些建立这所学院的人呢?无疑,前方的道路充满着障碍和挑战,但是我深信,我们的荣誉感,我们的热情以及我们的坚持不懈最终有一天会带领着我们到达我们珍贵的目标。
Lately, I have been making the following observation to my friends and family. In March and April, when I was thinking about joining CKGSB, I was mostly focused on the future of the school, the strength of its faculty, staff, and students, and its research and teaching environment. After spending more than one month at CKGSB, I now feel that this is by far the job for which I have the most passion. Many of us in CKGSB feel that we are truly working for a great cause --- we are working hard to build a world-class business school in China. As China gains more and more prominence in the world economy, China needs to, and must, have one or more world-class business school(s) which can provide the needed training and education for its future business leaders. Why shouldn’t we be the ones who build such a school? The journey will no doubt be filled with obstacles and challenges, but I am confident that our sense of pride, our enthusiasm, and our persistence will one day lead us to our cherished goal.
