我看到老板一张齐大无比的excel表惊呆了,问他这些数据都是你自己搜集的吗?他点头,说曾经有3个月的时间每天工作12小时一周七天。。。

Different people have different dreams and requirements. Many PhD students do not have any publications before graduation. Even UPenn graudates do not 100% have publications.

My senior classmate who is in the job market and does not have any publications is now facing hard time to find jobs at research universities. Her supervisor said that she should have worked over 80 hours since year one.

Of course, if she only wants to go to teaching universities, she can only work for her dissertation and does not need to work for other projects. We can only live once, why not try hard?

I do not think 80 hours are abnormal when we need to handle over 6 projects.

Though I know many professors work until midnight, you guys really scared me. So if I want to survive in academics, I have to work more than 80 hours a week for a least 11 years(five years as PHD student, six years as assistant professor)?

of course, at least 11 years...        so many positive or negative examples.  For example, in the last job market year,  the placements in some top programs are just so so if not terrible, although there might be other reasons :  the world economy, the wall street and academia have changed  their favors after the crisis.

Dandan, you do not need to work over 80 hours if your career goal is to get tenure at teaching universities. Ha! You need to spend time with your bf.

There are many reasons people work so hard. First, it is the norm for the academic world in the USA. This is similar to consulting or accounting jobs. The work hours are also very long. Why so long? Just the norm. Second, more input, more output including publications and income! The income difference is more than double between teaching and research university. As for publications, the difference is huge. Some have nothing while some have four top tier publications before graduation. Third, our academic world is attractive. Sometimes, I cannot stop doing research that makes me excited. For me, doing research is same as playing TV games. Some people play TV games over 80 hours while some do research over 80.
