一道PREP语法怎么也想不通

我总觉得这个THEIR是指RESEARCHERS，不过也没有更好的答案了，PREP的语法笔记里不是说就近指代吗？ 谢谢

我认为吧~一般在从句里的代词it、they啊就会优先指从句里的名词~
