(Updated Jan 4th)

GWD 5-Q30:

Which of the following most logically completes the argument?

The irradiation of food kills bacteria and thus retards spoilage.  However, it also lowers the nutritional value of many foods.  For example, irradiation destroys a significant percentage of whatever vitamin B1 a food may contain.  Proponents of irradiation point out that irradiation is no worse in this respect than cooking.  However, this fact is either beside the point, since much irradiated food is eaten raw, or else misleading, since _______.

A.      many of the proponents of irradiation are food distributors who gain from food’s having a longer shelf life

B.       it is clear that killing bacteria that may be present on food is not the only effect that irradiation has

C.      cooking is usually the final step in preparing food for consumption, whereas irradiation serves to ensure a longer shelf life for perishable foods

D.      certain kinds of cooking are, in fact, even more destructive of vitamin B1 than carefully controlled irradiation is

E.       for food that is both irradiated and cooked, the reduction of vitamin B1 associated with either process individually is compounded

(by frankzhifei)

(by frankzhifei)

How to explain this discrepancy?(我选Y国以更低的劳动成本招纳工程师)

问如何Support this hypothesis.

22. GWD26-Q22
People who have spent a lot of time in contact with animals often develop animal-induced allergies, some of them quite serious. In a survey of current employees in major zoos, about 30 percent had animal-induced allergies. Based on this sample, experts conclude that among members of the general population who have spent a similarly large amount of time in close contact with animals, the percentage with animal-induced allergies is not 30 percent but substantially more.
Which of the following, if true, provides the strongest grounds for the experts’ conclusion?支持

A.    A zoo employee who develops a serious animal-induced allergy is very likely to switch to some other occupation.  T
B.    A zoo employee is more likely than a person in the general population to keep one or more animal pets
C.    The percentage of the general population whose level of exposure to animals matches that of a zoo employee is quite small.
D.    Exposure to domestic pets is, on the whole, less likely to cause animal-induced allergy than exposure to many of the animals kept in zoos.
E.     Zoo employees seldom wear protective gear when they handle animals in their care.

GWD27-Q28

A.      The incidence of serious animal-induced allergies among current zoo employees is lower than that among the general population.
B.      Zoo employees tend to develop animal-induced allergies that are more serious than those of other people who spend equally large amounts of time with animals.
C.      Exposure to domestic pets is, on the whole, less likely to cause animal-induced allergy than is exposure to the kinds of animals that are kept in zoos.
D.     There is no occupation for which the risk of developing an animal-induced allergy is higher than 30 percent.
E.    Among members of the general population who have spent as much time with animals as zoo employees typically have, the percentage with animal-induced allergies is significantly more than 30 percent.

(by rfanrfan) confirm

(by happywawa) confirm

21,on-line shopping商品多樣化且選擇多 但是 convenience goods (題目有舉例是哪些商品就是一些日常用品)消費者不會有品牌傾向因為這些商品是基本需求 所以on-line shopping won’t make a profit on convenience goods  問weaken?

(by bttt1226)

In 1983 Argonia’s currency, the argon, underwent a reduction in value relative to the world’s strongest currencies. This reduction resulted in a significant increase in Argonia’s exports over 1982 levels. In 1987 a similar reduction in the value of the argon led to another increase in Argonia’s exports. Faced with the need to increase exports yet again, Argonia’s finance minister has proposed another reduction in the value of the argon.
Which of the following, if true, most strongly supports the prediction that the finance minister’s plan will not result in a significant increase in Argonia’s exports next year?
A.    The value of the argon rose sharply last year against the world’s strongest currencies.
B.    In 1988 the argon lost a small amount of its value, and Aronian exports rose slightly in 1989.
C.    The value of Argonia’s exports was lower last year than it was the year before.
D.    All of Argonia’s export products are made by factories that were operating at full capacity last year, and new factories would take years to build.
E.     Reductions in the value of the argon have almost always led to significant reductions in the amount of goods and services that Argonians purchase from abroad.

25, c Lyme disease is caused by a bacterium transmitted to humans by deer ticks. Generally deer ticks pick up the bacterium while in the larval stage from feeding on infected white-footed mice. However, certain other species on which the larvae feed do not harbor the bacterium. Therefore, if the population of these other species were increased, the number of ticks acquiring the bacterium and hence the number of people contracting Lyme disease would likely decline.
Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument?
A. Ticks do not suffer any adverse consequences from carrying the bacterium that causes Lyme disease in humans.
B. There are no known cases of a human’s contracting Lyme disease through contact with white-footed mice.
C. A deer tick feeds only once while in the larval stage.
D. A single host animal can be the source of bacterium for many tick larvae.
E. None of the other species on which deer tick larvae feed harbor other bacteria that ticks transmit to humans

Telomerase is an enzyme that is produced only in cells that are actively dividing.  For this reason it is generally absent from body tissues in adults.  Bone

marrow is an exception to this rule, however, since even in adults, bone marrow cells continually divide to replace old blood cells.  Cancers are another

exception, because their cells are rapidly dividing.
The information provided most strongly supports which of the following? C
A.Telomerase is the only enzyme that is present in cancerous cells but absent from cells that are not actively dividing.
B.In children, the only body tissues from which telomerase is absent are those in which cells are not rapidly dividing.
C.The presence of telomerase in bone marrow is no indication of bone marrow cancer.
D.Cancer of the bone marrow develops more rapidly than cancer growing in any other kind of adult tissue.
E.The level of telomerase production is always higher in cancerous tissue than in noncancerous tissue

55.Q21:TT-GWD 2-27
Rye sown in the fall and plowed into the soil in early spring leaves a residue that is highly effective at controlling broad-leaved weeds, but unfortunately for only about 45 days. No major agricultural crop matures from seed in as little as 45 days. Synthetic herbicides, on the other hand, although not any longer-lasting, can be reapplied as the crop grows. Clearly, therefore, for major agricultural crops, plowing rye into the soil can play no part in effective weed control. D
The argument is most vulnerable to the objection that it fails to
A. consider that there might be minor, quick-growing crops that do mature in 45 days or less
B. identify any alternative method of weed control that could be used instead of the method it  rejects
C. distinguish among the various kinds of synthetic herbicides
D. allow for the possibility of combining the two weed-control methods it mentions
E. allow for the possibility that plants other than rye, handled the same way, might have the same effect

Plankton generally thrive in areas of the ocean with sufficient concentrations of certain nitrogen compounds near the surface, where plankton live.  Nevertheless, some areas, though rich in these nitrogen compounds, have few plankton.  These areas have particularly low concentrations of iron, and oceanographers hypothesize that this shortage of iron prevents plankton from thriving.  However, an experimental release of iron compounds into one such area failed to produce a thriving plankton population, even though local iron concentrations increased immediately.

Which of the following, if true, argues most strongly against concluding, on the basis of the information above, that the oceanographers’ hypothesis is false?
A. Not all of the nitrogen compounds that are sometimes found in relatively high concentrations in the oceans are nutrients for plankton.
B. Certain areas of the ocean support an abundance of plankton despite having particularly low concentrations of iron.
C. The release of the iron compounds did not increase the supply of nitrogen compounds in the area.
D. A few days after the iron compounds were released, ocean currents displaced the iron-rich water from the surface.
E. The iron compounds released into the area occur naturally in areas of the ocean where plankton thrive.
ANS: D

67.GWD原题GWD-4-Q14 D
Guidebook writer:  I have visited hotels throughout the country and have noticed that in those built before 1930 the quality of the original carpentry work is generally superior to that in hotels built afterward.  Clearly carpenters working on hotels before 1930 typically worked with more skill, care, and effort than carpenters who have worked on hotels built subsequently.
Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the guidebook writer’s argument?

A. The quality of original carpentry in hotels is generally far superior to the quality of original carpentry in other structures, such as houses and stores.
B. Hotels built since 1930 can generally accommodate more guests than those built before 1930.
C. The materials available to carpenters working before 1930 were not significantly different in quality from the materials available to carpenters working after 1930.
D. The better the quality of original carpentry in a building, the less likely that building is to fall into disuse and be demolished.
E. The average length of apprenticeship for carpenters has declined significantly since 1930.

然后提出Venus也应该有个Moon(在这里的Moon是不是应该是卫星的意思?)

However, 有一项技术which can prevent the leaks 被install了,所以,provided this technology is effective,那些害怕是不必要的。问上述的argument based on 哪一个assumption.
(双重否定,就是说那个东西一定能够prevent leaks),第二个是说,湖底does not contain 之前pollution的残留物which 会在建oil pipeline的时候被绞到湖里去。我纠结了很久之后发现题干中有说,provided this tech is effective.
GWD28-Q9:B
Early in the twentieth century, Lake Konfa became very polluted.  Recently fish populations have recovered as release of industrial pollutants has declined and the lake’s waters have become cleaner.  Fears are now being voiced that the planned construction of an oil pipeline across the lake’s bottom might revive pollution and cause the fish population to decline again.  However, a technology for preventing leaks is being installed.  Therefore, provided this technology is effective, those fears are groundless.
The argument depends on assuming which of the following?
A. Apart from development related to the pipeline, there will be no new industrial development around the lake that will create renewed pollution in its waters.
B. Other than the possibility of a leak, there is no realistic pollution threat posed to the lake by the pipeline’s construction.
C. There is no reason to believe that the leak-preventing technology would be ineffective when installed in the pipeline in Lake Konfa.
D. Damage to the lake’s fish populations would be the only harm that a leak of oil from the pipeline would cause.
E. The species of fish that are present in Lake Konfa now are the same as those that were in the lake before it was affected by pollution.

~~~~~~~~~~
75.1个是什么关于patent的。一个DD的市场前景很好,应该可以增加sale,为企业增加收入。但是不能什么exclusive patent较长时间。填空,我选的是这个exclusive patent会使competitor 也学会manufacture这个产品。其他也都比较明显的无关
76.某地房地产税收是政府对房产的估计价值乘税率, 今年的房产分析下来总价值比去年低, 但是预计拥有者(property owner)的税不会少为什么?
我选择的是今年的税率政策没有出台但是会比去年高 这道题D是说大量外地人涌入本地交换我个人认为这对property owner的税收没有关系,可能有变体,大家一定读清楚
77.讲的是科学家一开始都认为吉他的弦用久了会发生xx反应,具体是什么忘了,总之发生了这个反应就不好使了。然后又说有一个科学家的儿子是个玩吉他的专业人士,说吉他弦报废的原因不是xx反应,而是弦用久了会沾上很多dirt and oil. 问加强。选的是那个做实验把新的吉他弦弄上dirt and oil以后发现新弦也报废的选项。
78.95年以后经历了经济危机~到00年的时候那个地方有工作的人数量减少了2000,但是00年那个在那个地方有工作的人数目增加了1000.问怎么解释~~选项有点忘了。。只记得好像C是说城外有个大工厂搬走了,带走了2000个工作,,因为它要在市内建一个新的更现代化的工厂..好像我没选这个~~不想误导大家。。。理解上可能有偏差~~不知道有没NN出来指正下!!~~~~
79.Because it was long thought that few people would watch lengthy televised political messages, most televised political advertisements, like commercial advertisements, took the form of short messages. Last year, however, one candidate produced a half-hour-long advertisement. During the half hour the
advertisement was aired, a substantial portion of the viewing public tuned into the advertisement.
Clearly, then, many more people are interested in watching lengthy televised political messages than was previously thought.
Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?
A. The candidate’s ratings improved significantly as a result of the half-hour-long political
advertisement.
B. Political advertisements have become increasingly influential in determining voters’ decisions
at the polls.
C. Many people would appreciate the opportunity to become better acquainted with political
candidates’ views on current political issues.
D. Most people who are interested in political issues watch television regularly.
E. Most of the viewers who tuned in to the candidate’s half-hour-long advertisement last year did
not change channels after the first few minutes.
ANS: E
想了好久,好久,好久,大家幫忙看看我對這道題的分析對不對?謝謝!
Plantings of cotton bioengineered to produce its own insecticide against bollworms, a major cause of crop failure, sustained little bollworm damage until this year.  This year the plantings are being seriously damaged by bollworms.  Bollworms, however, are not necessarily developing resistance to the cotton’s insecticide.  Bollworms breed on corn, and last year more corn than usual was planted throughout cotton-growing regions.  So it is likely that the cotton is simply being overwhelmed by corn-bred bollworms.
In evaluating the argument, which of the following would be most useful to establish?
A.      Whether corn could be bioengineered to produce the insecticide
B.       Whether plantings of cotton that does not produce the insecticide are suffering unusually extensive damage from bollworms this year(B為答案)
C.      Whether other crops that have been bioengineered to produce their own insecticide successfully resist the pests against which the insecticide was to protect them
D.      Whether plantings of bioengineered cotton are frequently damaged by insect pests other than bollworms
E.       Whether there are insecticides that can be used against bollworms that have developed resistance to the insecticide produced by the bioengineered cotton
