I have similar background with lz. With an IS background, I applied 20+ last year, and 4 schools this year, all marketing program. Only 1 waiting is given by our university, but now has been changed to rejection. The rejection does not mean you are not qualified. I don't think the marketing Ph.D. program is a good fit for you at the current moment. You can find more challenges and earn more money in the industry NOT the academy. The following is a list of key elements: 1) match with the program I heard that UIUC gave an offer to an I/S background person last year. But IUB is focused on CB/modeling, the professor (a chinese ap) usually recruits people with psych/ecno background. Sometimes, the only want to find a matched candidate, not the most outstanding student. 2) relationship with professors (people in the committee, who are in charge of admission..) 3) Your acdemic potential (research paper/experience...) 4) Luck It is very important for you to find the right direction. Anyway, Ph.D. program is not like what you imagined. You may lose the interests as soon as you join the program.
