Being a specialist or a generalist is a meaningful yet contentious topic to me. Different people hold distinct opinions due to not only their own experience but also their understandings. However, I believe that in the university we should specialize in one subject in that the decision enables us to save time, gain professional knowledge and make some friends with similar interest.
The threshold reason for my propensity for specializing one subject is that we are able to pay our attention to what we like most. In the universities, there are countless subjects to participate in, which actually are useless and waste the students a large amount of energy and time. For example, my roommates used to learn some lessons about the Physics when he is major in Finance. This decision caused him to study from the morning to evening and has no rest at all. However, after his graduation, he chose to work as a banker and have no chances to take advantage of what he learnt from the classes. As a college student, we must invest our time to the subjects that I really need to study.
In addition, it is a good decision to gain some professional knowledge, if we choose to specialize in one subject. As we all know, no body in the world can learn all the things well. Thus, in the limited time of our college, it is a good decision to specialize in one subject and become the excellent expertise in it. If we keep studying from one subject to another, it is obvious that we can go no where in the end. Participate all your energy, all our time, all our passion into one subject, we can indeed climb the summit of the particular field. Moreover, we have more opportunities to meet with some people with related expertise and experience, which is very helpful for our future career. For instance, due to my specializing in finance knowledge, I got an intern in the Enerst&Young and meet with some formal employees. With their help, I was get used to this industry and attained the chance to use my knowledge, which is really a good experience. Owing to the internship and the relationship between these friends, I succeeded to become a accountant when I graduated from my university.
To sum up, though it is plausible in some cases, such as that taking different subjects help us to develop a more broad academic basis and contact different professionals, I strongly support the statement that the students on campus should be required to specialize in one subject. The decision gives us more time, more profound knowledge and more friends.
