How Important Is Wall.St experience ??

For IB, what's the advantage to have couple yrs of Wall.St experience ??

assume that
1.  I have had couple years of pre-MBA WE in a major HF 2.  I will have a top MBA+CFA.  3. eventually I want to return to China for IB.
How much advantage will I have by gathering 1-2 yrs of Wall.St experience first?  compare to go directly to BB's HK/SG office or their SF office.  
The cost of living in NYC is just way too high, and even with a banker's salary the living standard isn't that great.  I would much prefer the life style of HK or the bay area.

hong kong is not better off than nyc in terms of life style. trust me, you wont have time to enjoy life when working in finance in hong kong. i personally dislike these two places. no comment on san fran since i never worked there. but the weather of bay area is hard to beat, though san fran is bit colder and more windy.

back to your question, it really depends on what you want. if you want to climb the career ladder faster, and fight your way quicker in the IB jungle, then immediately get on local experience is not a bad idea. but the thing is there might be tons of returning chinese who think just alike you. it is harder and harder to stand out...

remember, in general, hong kong is a place where American education and experience is highly valued. if you are bored of IBD in hong kong some day, your wall street experience could open you many doors.

2. 刚毕业的时候花1-2年在街上做associate level grunt work然后移回亚洲，到底别人value不value这2年的经验？还是不管Street, City， or HK, IBD经验就是IBD经验,doesn't matter where you get it?

请问一下，既然你在HF工作过两年，应该对金融从业和职业发展应该比较熟悉的或者是比较有目标性的。

Project exposure that you can get is far more important than where you take the job. So...I guess in US, your chance being involved in exciting projects is slightly lower than in HK, but please do mind that all these guesses are random and may not happen to you.

that's the advice I have been receiving, get your hands on as many different types of deals as possible. 

But I am not exactly sure how the deals are handled inside a IB.  Does local branch do all the work?  or major deals are still sent back and worked by the HQ ?

你在美国待了多久？IBD最后还是客户关系的，老外英语还有口音呢，在纽约想升上去基本很难。

没有人能告诉你，你在纽约一定比亚洲好。

前两年，纽约一定比香港好，现在，不好说。

不过，我前面都说过了，香港是个很势利的地方，过去是，现在也是。

看不懂你的问题。

if you are associate, you will wait for your boss to pick you for the deals. the most popular one got the most chances. that is, the more capable and hard working you are, the more work you get.
