Good enough to apply for top5 b-school?

Male, 28 right now, going to apply for 2008 MBA, finance education background, senior IT technical engineer w/e (ye, a little bit weird, Im a senior engineer in telecommunication industry, not a finance guy)

7 years w/e in a top30 corporate of fortune500. regional engineer 3 years, regional technical consultant 2 years, regional BD specialist 1 year, global solution manager 1 year

almost 2 years w/e (before enrollment) in world famous non-profit organization as regional program manager

BS in finance, not famous university, GPA 3.3, G/T N/A at this point of time

significant achievements: 1)promoted from regional employee to global employee; 2)changed career from IT industry to non-profit sector. as for the matter of manager or team leader, I was a manager of a section (13 guys). In my opinion, manager title is less significant than two things I mentioned. But Im not sure about it, please give me some advice.

I probably apply for HBS, Wharton, Tuck, Kellogg, and Yale. I can pay for all the expense during 2 years study. My long-term goal is back to non-profit sector, and short-term goal might be MC or corporate (business experience and money).

my questions are:
1)is my background diversified and successful enough to apply for top5 or top10 b-schools?
2)do top b-schools favor non-profit sector as a long-term goal?
3)is there any chance that b-schools consider my career path ridiculous?
4)is there any chance that b-schools consider the relationship of my short-term goal and long-term goal unreasonable?

please give me your comments, advice, opinion, etc.

thanks a lot

I would say you have very strong background, but wonder how you connect your Short term goal to your long term goal. You may want to clarify how your short term goal will lead to your long term goal.

Meanwhile, If you really want to apply for 2008 MBA, you really have to speed up since the Round 2 deadline is approaching for most of the schools you plan to apply for.

thanks dude.

How to connect short-term-goal to long-term-goal

the truth is most NGOs operate as corporate do. I mean NGOs need expertise in management, finance, marketing etc to run smoothly, economically, and efficiently. minimizing operation costs and maximizing outcome is the goal of both NGOs and corporates. so, I need hands-on experience to better serve the people and the planet. working in MC or corporate is the way I practise theories and methodologies that I learned in MBA education. (another reason is personal, I need money since I will spent all my savings on MBA education. no need to mention it in essay. right?)

about achievements: manager title, global employee, and changed career, adcom would consider which one of them the least significant?

You still have lots of research to do.  Try to get the following book:

How to Get Into the Top MBA Programs
by J.D., Richard Montauk

try get GMAT out of your way as soon as possible, keep in mind a good gmat score won't ganrantee anything, but a bad one will almost certainly keep you out of the top5.

By the way, why not MIT and Stanford? I took some courses at Wharton when I was at Penn but did not like it at all.

excel, thanks. I will get one. btw, do you have an e-version of that book?

HTML2008, thanks, GMAT 700+ is good enough? emmm... actually, I will choose 2 of big 3. HBS definitely takes one count. comparing stanford with wharton, i think wharton is more attractive for me in terms of humanism.

strong background but really tight schedule if you want to apply for 2008 fall term. most of the schools got their 2nd round deadlines in early Jan 08 and international applicants are considered to have much lower chance to be admitted in the 3rd and 4rh rounds.
