A不对，因为前面是分号，they没指代的对象，B应该也不对，that没有指代的对象；E不对，that不能修饰非限制性定语从句；

C whereas起转折的作用，好像题目没有这样吧并且用了被动，所以我觉得选D吧， compare with 比较对象平等
