For non-PE/VC field, we have:

  1. Investment Banking Club (one of the 3 biggest clubs in Columbia)
  2. Investment Management Association (lots of my classmates are interested in this field)
  3. Equity Research Club
  4. Sales & Trading Club
  5. Finance Organization

For PE/VC field (and related area), we have:

1. Private Equity /Venture Capital Club (one of the top 3 biggest clubs in Columbia)

2. Columbia Entrepreneurs Organization

3. Small Business Consulting Program (it is a Club, not a class or official “program”)

4. Technology Business Group (they organize to visit hi-tech companies and VC firms in Sillicon Valley and Menlo Park every year)

Here goes the Full list of Student Clubs @ Columbia Business School (club introduction, officers, events, and webpage, if applicable):

我想问下,哥大审材料的时间,是按照你submit的时间,还是你把钱都交完的时间呢?交钱一般是立刻就能汇过去吗?谢谢

I believe your application will be considered "complete" ONLY when you submit all the requried documents (essays, recommendation letters, online-forms, unofficial transcripts, etc) AND when you settle the payment.

If you apply online, the last step is to settle the payment of application fee online, which will take only a few minute to process and you will receive an email shortly after stating that the applicaiton fee is received.

Please tell us about what you feel most passionate in life  (Recommended 250 word limit).", 是不是要写个人爱好啊? 多谢.

1. It doesn't have to be about your hobbies. It can be everything: career ambition, hobby/interests (e.g., math, sports, history, etc.), a certain type of lifestyle (contributing to the society, travelling around the world, etc.), a certain place (how about New York City ! ;) , a certain issue/topic (e.g., proverty, world peace, early-childhood eduation, etc.)

2. Please keep in mind that it is NOT about the topic/issue that you choose to cover, it is ALL about why you choose this topic/issue, because the latter one will decide whether this essay will be a great essay  (yes, you NEED to write good and even great essays to boost your chance to get admitted)

Furthermore, WHY you choose this topic/issue is ALL about what kind of person you are (most of the time, what we are passionate about helps DEFINE who we are, our style, and what we will become later)

3. Relax and be true to yourself. ONLY WHEN you are relaxed and be true to yourself, you won't find it neccearry to ask around "what is this essay about?". You will have your own judgement and choice.

4. DO NOT over think about how Columbia will judge you, the more you overthink about it, the less Columbia will care about you. Because everything we overthink about something, we do not act naturally

Good luck.

I am not sure what you mean by 'non-traditional', do you mean sectors such as "non-for-profit, government, advertisement, publishing, architect, etc., which are "underpresented industry sectors" in business school?

For this year, I guess you can say that most of us (those who come directly from China) come frome the financial service industry or used to work on a finance function (corporate finance dept of MNC, for example).

Yes, Columbia is a famous "finance school" in terms of :

1. Lots of students (not only Chinese) COME from this area;

2. Lots of students GO into this area upon graduation;

3. Columbia's great location in New York City and very strong tie with the financial service industry in New York

4. Curriculum is quant-heavy and the school want to prepare you well for the upcoming summer intern/full-time job recruitment.

But lots of students go for consulting, McKinsey is one of the biggest recruiters of Columbia students (I refer to full-time job offer).

P.S. my knowlege/information on how active Columbia students are in other sectors are quiet limited so you might want to do your own research if your interests are with other sectors, e.g. management consulting, healthcare, real estate, general management, technology, marketing, media management, energy, retail & luxuary goods, and so on. Columbia has big-size student clubs for these sectors as well.

We've answered this question on today's conf. call (arranged by Chasedream) with prospective students. Please refer to related documents, which I believe will be posted on CD soon.

Again, we are NOT at an appropriate position to comment on any other peer schools, since we only take classes at Columbia and we only have access to Columbia's wonderful resources (both academic wise and recruitment wise).

During the CD conf. call though, we did talk about why Columbia is one of the top (if not the ONLY top) choices for students who are interested in obtaining very solid education in finance as well as in landing very good jobs in the financial service industry.

Toefl.

I do not know your Toefl score therefore only a "general answer" can be provided.

1. I believe every school has a "bottom line" (e.g. a minimum score that they expect from an applicant), just that some school (like Havard and other) OFFICIALLY required such a minimum score (you can refer to the requirement of Havard as an example), other schools (like Columbia and so on) do not "officially" require it.

2. I suggest you take the Havard (or other top tier school) requirement as a "measurement", if your Toefl is 10 or more scores below the "required" (officially or unoffically) one, then I personally believe that the probability of the school (esp. if you are applying a top tier one) is concerned about your English skill would be rather "high".

3. But I do not think the school will "cut you off" immediately if your score fall into the "more than 10 score below the required one" area. If they like the other parts of your application (essays, backgrounds, achievements, education excellence, etc.) very much, they will still offer you an interview and try to evaluate your English skills more during the interview.
