I think bolei is just trying to help, though some info may not be that accurate.

As an ex-consultant, my understanding is that McK does provide some IT-related consulting service, say IT strategy (quite high level compared to what I will list down later).  But "IT Consulting", as a term, typically refers to more detailed/lower-level consulting service, such as ERP system implementation, or architecture design/optimization, data format unifization, etc.

What I heard is that several years ago, McK China started to strengthen its technology arm to beef up its service lines.  Actually based on what McK claimed on its website (http://www.mckinsey.com/clientservice/bto/home.asp), it can actually provide some lower-level IT consulting service.  Not sure to what level of detail they are delivering the IT consulting service but one thing for sure is that McK's cost structure won't allow it to compete with Accenture/BearingPoint to deliver full-blown EPR implementation project.

Any other insider info?  I believe there are quite a few McK or ex-McK consultants in this forum.  Your clarification please

McK did try to build it's IT strategy (e.g. 5-year planning) service, and hired quite some people for it's BTO  (see Simba's linkage above) around 2003/2004 in China.        But it turned out a not so successful strategic move at least in China -- Mck couldn't win related deals, and most of the BTO people they hired were sitting on the bench, thus McK also assign them to the it's normal strategy project to improve the utilization of it's people.

Also, please respect other people's efforts here.   Most people provide information based on the facts we know, though sometime, information are unavoidably mingled with personal understandings and from unique perspectives.     If only based on the fact that our perspectives are unique to some extent, and we don't share anything with other people to avoid "misleading/confusing", then I guess nobody will go to bschools and fewer people will help each other  :-)

to answer your question: both.  some go into MC while others go into the IT consulting arm of McK.  it all depends on the background of the individual.  if they have technical background, McK is inclined to bring them into the IT consulting arm.

what type of information are you looking for, with regards to those chinese students that have gotten into consulting after MBA?
contact information?  then i would say that it is impolite to give their contact information on a forum like this.
background information?  they come from various backgrounds.  some hail from consulting, while others come from industry.

go to the insead information session.  you can find out if there's one coming up in your area
go for the world mba tour.  insead usually has alumni helping out there.  from there, it is much easier to get their contact information.

That is what I thought.  heading to MC or IT related consulting jobs depends on the previous W/E and abilities...

I was not trying to ask some private personal info ,,, if possible to get answer, what I asked is how many chinese students (career switchers) got MC offers and how many students got ICT(IT/Teleco) related strategy consultant job?

The reason I asked here is you guys are studying or have graduated from Insead. hope you guys can give some one hand info.

I think many prospective students also have this kind of questions.

BTW, MC is not only option for us I do believe. Many other consulting areas need elites !!

perhaps you can explain to me as to when i have provided misleading information.  i like to be corrected and will appreciate it if you can share with me.  whether you want to do it in a forum post or a private message, feel free to do so.

to answer tupo's question:

i know of one intake of INSEAD students, where all the people with previous IT background was able to secure a first round interview with McK's BTO arm.  now, whether they managed to secure a first round interview with other management consulting firms, or McK's general management consulting arm, i have no idea.  i better say things clearer to avoid any future misunderstanding. 

BTO focus is on IT strategy...to the best of my understanding (disclaimer: i'm not from BTO, so i cannot say for sure).  i did chat with someone from BTO london before.

As I know, Mck BTO doesn't have a factual arm in China. Mck BTO Asia is an organization. The projects are in pan-asia areas, so the English requirement is high. Currently BTO is doing a big project for Lenovo to manage to integrate the systems all over the world. Of course, BTO doesn't do implementation. It provides strategy, planning, and overall management.
