I am also thinking of applying for Insead 08 Fall intake.

Trying to figure out the key differences between MC and IB. Can someone enlighten me with some descriptions:

- what does MC/IB normally do? (e.g. doing strategy planning? meeting customers? doing calculation? etc.)
- what kind of character suits for MC/IB (e.g. Sales type suit for MC ? analytical for IB?)
- how are the Chinese doing in each of the 2 areas? (e.g.  career progress, salary?)
- Stress level ?
- job placement for Chinese student? (location? %?)
- any other things that need to be considered when choosing between the two.

Also about general management, what kind of positions do MBA grad usually get in operations? program manager? C*O? regional manager?

Thanks a million!

1. Please read Vault guide or talk to insiders to get some sense. Basically, consultants deal with projects to help provide solutions to either corporates or government. Bankers aim to provide capital financing solutions to customers and maximize the use of capital.

2. Definitely you need to be a team player. If you have done MBTI before, I think E, T and J will fit in IB and MC.

3. A lot of Chinese alumni from INSEAD used to work or work for top consulting firms. As for IB, LBS is slightly stronger than INSEAD now because it's a 2 year program and  its location really helps a lot.

4. Stress? How much stress you think you will get when you have to work till 2-3 am everyday for 6 days every week? Consulting is slightly better. 60-80 working hours based on projects.

5. No specific data. If you graduate from top b school, you will have bigger chance to secure a job here.

6. Think carefully. Are you really into finance? or you're just chasing after the money. Not many people can stand the inhuman long working hours for long time.

谢谢LS的回答。
原来CD还有一个职业版,里面有不错的介绍。和我一样迷糊的CDer可以看看下面的链接:

For 3 and 4 above:

- Insead is definitely my dream school, but to be frank, when it comes to the possibility to place MBA students into IBs, LBS is much better than Insead, given its great location and track record.  Insead is traditionally strong in helping its graduates to land a job in consulting (well, of course, some of them were consultants prior to Insead)

- Working hours in consulting sometimes is as horrible as in IBs, though the absolute cash return (i.e. salary and bonus) is much less than the latter (esp in current booming capital market).  However, compensation should be just one of the criteria when you choose your future career path, as these two industries will lead you to different directions, train you with different skill sets and mindsets.

To inseadsh, I am just curious what's your post-MBA career goal.  Consulting? Banking? Corporate?

He is desperately going to banking

In finance, INSEAD is only second to LBS. I mean in Europe.

Well, it's challenging to change your career without summer intern opportunity to prove yourself.  Wish inseadsh good luck!

nnm, you are still into consulting, right?

There is always a challenge for whatever decision you make, right?

IB and consulting are two very different development routes. LBS is strong in finance but INSEAD can also offer you the foundations and network you want to knock the door of IB open.

simba, I have to correct you that the working hours for consulting and IB are by no means the same. Usually working hours for consulting is between 60-80/week, which is dependent on the EM and the project itself. But the bankers definitely have to work longer, say 80-100. So if you calculate the salary by hour, there should be no significant difference.

inseadsh, trust me.  I started my career as a consultant and later transfered to a second-tier IB.  Cummulatively I had 5 yrs w/e in these industries.

(oh, yes, in IB you typically are engaged in more than one deal/leads, but you still might have some ups and downs in terms of working hours.  In terms of average working hours per week, IB is longer than consulting.  In terms of hour rate, if we include the year-end bonus, IB beats consulting, sometimes the gap is pretty huge.
Consulting in China has changed quite a lot in the past few years.  One of the trend is that PE becomes much more important a client than, say, early 2000's.  The project from PE firm (typically a market/commercial DD job) is quite challenging given its tight deadline.  There're more short jobs (i.e. 3-4 weeks) than before - and it is really puts a lot pressure on the consultant - you need to become an expert in certain industry within 2-3 weeks, not 4-6 weeks.
Just my 2 cents

Simbasl:

I don't care about money at all.

But 60 to 80 hours is a bit over my expectation.

60 the most for me........

what do you say?
