这道题我是这么想的
文章先提出一个旧观点
然后用另外一个事实否定
then提出新观点 short workday is not peculiar to industrialized societies.
我认为主要是后面的 RATHER 干扰了我 我几乎觉得rather 后面的不能叫做新观点 只是一种解释
所以我觉得结论的定位比较重要

我在选择的时候选了E 因为我觉得他证明了 rather   both the extended workday of 1880 and the shorter workday of today are
products of different stages of the continuing process of
industrialization.  但是后来我认为这道加强题证明的观点核心只有一个 就是short workday is not peculiar to industrialized societies.       
条件反射想到   short workday 也在以前出现过  也就是B
