理工科博士， 36岁， 考虑转行读 MBA

本人美国 Top 5 Engineering School 的电机工程博士，1998年毕业以后一直在硅谷高科技公司里搞技术。经济上不错。虽不敢说退休，也差不多可以后顾无忧的水平 (总资产约 USD 2 million)。现在一家大公司的Principal Engineer. 工资140k，外加 stock+bonus 可以轻松250k.

学业，科研，和技术上一直做的不错。国内曾是某名牌大学少年班的。科研上有30多篇论文和十个专利. 2003年自己还业余搞了个发明，卖给硅谷一家startup 公司, 获利约500k, 付清了房贷。

但本人长期以来志向就不是专搞技术，内心其实厌恶枯燥繁琐的科研技术工作。毕业时虽有作 faculty 的机会，
   但几乎毫不犹豫的选择了工业界。读书和职业生涯中曾多次大幅转换专业领域，
   一是追求热门，
   二是本人觉得技术上在一个领域搞长了就新鲜感全没有了。工作换的也频繁。正是因为这些，
   一直没能作出大的名气。
   甚至在公司里也未能担任什么 Leader.

以当前这种状况，实在不想在一条老路上继续走下去。本人其实兴趣十分广泛，爱好文,史，哲，音乐，(但没有体育)，业余时间自己炒房,炒股,炒地，都颇有斩获。Communication skills, People skills, Team work, and Time management, 自己觉得都不错。

现在虽拖家带口, 仍在考虑读一名校MBA。后半生仍想在business world 实现自己的价值。

几个月前刚考了GMAT, 760, AWA 4.5.

坛子上有没有志同道合的朋友请与我联系。背景相似的犹为欢迎。

个人觉得写essay 是个大问题。愿一起切磋。

My personal suggestion is to hire a very GOOD PROFESSIONAL application agency ---does not mean to ask them to make up any story of you, but mean that a professional agency can help you get an edge of ur package by polishing ur writing and layout, and help you hit the point at the initial trial, coz u r not a young applicant, comparatively speaking.

I hv known lots of applicants with great academic, working, and personal traits...but their essays didn't show any advantage of themselves, which led to a ding with no doubt. Learn from others' lesson, and apply smart

My second suggestion is...you may want to consider EMBA...or go both routes simultaneously...

不过您在年龄上可能有些大了，又拖家带口的，恐怕不是那么适合去投行或者咨询公司。

倘若再回工业界， 似乎不是您的初衷.

LZ打算MBA毕业以后干什么呢？是继续回原来的行业还是希望去做投资或者咨询等？看到很多工作很多年的朋友读MBA，受到鼓励。这些朋友的OPPORTUNITY COST比我们刚刚工作几年的还是大很多的。大家都加油！

Think about the quality of life and pay that you are enjoying now, I don't think you can easily to get back to the same thing after MBA.

谢谢各位的热心回复.

目前的工作其实还可以.轻松得近乎枯燥.离家近.老板也还算赏识.只是提升希望不大.

做engineer就这样.能做到principal差不多就是到顶了.以上给的compensation只是这几年的.等把股票都卖完以后收入只会减少.

考虑的是辞掉工作, 以破釜沉舟的决心, 读一个full-time, top-school 的 MBA.

一想起Essay就头大, 不是写作不行, 只因实在找不到 business, leadership的素材.公司里一直被当作技术专才使用. 总是让我一人做比较难的课题.别说Leadership,连跟人一起work都不多.

真烦透了这种生活. 个人觉得以自己的性格, 抱负, 和能力, 当初搞技术就是走错了路. 后来者足戒啊!

拿到MBA之后做什么呢? 去IB只怕是晚了. Consulting 倒其实是经验越多越好, 但要的不是我这种工作经验.最现实的就是回到工业界,做市场或管理. 希望能做到区域director的职位.

也曾想过去做finance. UC Berkeley的MFE各位以为如何?

Won't hurt to do some research yourself.  I've personally never used professional service but I would imagine that each company and each package holds their own strengths and weaknesses.  Just like all the GMAT study materials and courses out there, you will have to find one that fits you and someone you trust.

There're plenty you can do on your own as well.  Leverage your network, the alums from your school, the successful people in your company.  You should be able to find plenty of people going through or have completed their programs.  Start talking to them early about their experience and get advices from them.  By the time you work on your essays, you should have made some solid connections and have a diverse collection of editor contacts.  The application itself with put your soft skills to test.  Can you motivate others to want to help you and stick with it through the stressful times?  Can you put together a team of people to help you through the process, leveraging each of their strengths at the appropriate stages?  Can you manage the "project" and your time effectively?

本人没有OP牛，但是情况有点类似。既然在湾区，能不能考虑Berkerley的part time program呢？为什么一定要Full time呢？Part time公司可能还有Reimbursement吧？另外我也在湾区，愿意的话可以交个朋友。
