Human beings are famous or notorious for their insatiable needs for a long time. When someone points out that people are never satisfied with what they have but always want something more or something different, I cannot agree with it more. The desire for something better may come from what other people have but you do not. This is particularly true when peer pressure is concerned. An elementary school boy will not pestering his parents on buying a fancy car model until he discovers that his classmate has already got one on his birthday. A young girl will not dream of the glittering earrings unless she finds out that her best friend appears much more attractive in the party with a pair on her. When people grow older, the situation never becomes any better. A wife often complains about the small living room in her house after a visit to her neighbor’s newly-furnished apartment, while her husband longs for a new car after he has tasted the “ultimate driving experience” on his colleague’s BMW. What can also be the source of such a desire is the inner need of every person to achieve more. Compared with the above situation, this tendency seems more positive and beneficial. When we are busy with our lessons, one thing that keeps us holding on is the wish to get a better grade in the forthcoming exam. With such an expectation, we will bury ourselves in piles of materials in the school library for a whole week. And when we finally achieve our goals, a more challenging task will soon appear, which propel us to move on. Yes, we are always moving on in our life without a stop. And another factor that contributes to this phenomenon is that there is always someone we care about so much that we want to give them a more desirable life. Thus, parents are willing to work overnight as long as their children are able to attend the best university in the country; lovers never complain about arranging for countless time on an elaborate proposal so long as their sweethearts smile at last; and scientists always devote all their lifetime to continuous experiments in the lab only for a single breakthrough in a certain field that will benefit millions of people. Therefore, while the insatiable human needs can sometimes give rise to something undesirable, in most other cases, it is the desire that provides the society with the very incentive to further development. 还有一个月不到就要考拉... |
