She knows that it’s only possible to spot certain errors when the choice is viewed in the context of the sentence. An 800 test taker doesn’t worry about correcting the nonunderlined portion of the sentence. Even if it’s awkwardly phrased, that’s not your problem to solve. An 800 test taker thinks of parallelism whether she sees lists or word pairs like between…and and fewer…than. An 800 test taker realizes that she may need to make a sentence wordier in order to make it correct. The shortest option is not always the best option. When an 800 test taker finds the original sentence confusing, he uses the nonunderlined portion to tell him what the underlined portion must include. An 800 test taker is aware that the subject of a sentence can come after the verb, particularly in constructions beginning with there are or there is. When you see conditional sentences or multiple verb tenses within a single sentence, pay particular attention to the tenses and determine whether they’re correct. An 800 test takers knows the difference between the perfect tense and past perfect. The perfect tense (has played) describes either a very recent event or one that began in the past and has continued into the present. The past perfect (had played) describes an event both started and completed in the past. An 800 test taker realizes that it and they, even though they are commonly misused, are still pronouns and still need to refer to particular nouns. He is suspicious whenever he sees either underlined in a Sentence Correction question. Whenever an 800 test taker sees that a pronoun can logically rfer to more than one noun in a sentence, or that there’s no noun for it to refer to, she knows that the pronoun is being used incorrectly and needs to be fixed. An 800 test taker understands that meaning is an inevitable part of grammar and an inevitable part of Sentence Correction questions. The purpose of grammar and its many rules is to facilitate communication, to make one person’s meaning clear to someone else. An 800 test taker recognizes that many answer choices will be wrong because they distort the meaning of the original sentence. Sometimes necessary grammatical changes will alter the meaning and that’s fine, but an unnecessary alteration is always wrong. An 800 test taker always identifies the grammatically correct choices before considering the effectiveness of expression. The correct choice will always contain correct grammar, if not stellar style. An 800 test taker lets the differences among the answer choices guide him when he’s stumped, remembering that the point isn’t to create a perfect sentence but to choose the best choice from the ones given. An 800 test taker consistently looks for the most concise, grammatically correct answer choice. An 800 test taker understands that the passive voice does not itself constitute a grammatical error and only eliminates such a choice when there is a grammatically correct alternative in the active voice. An 800 test taker puts the omitted pieces back into the sentence to see if the abbreviated version is correct, as in the explanations above.
