131 Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Only people who earn a lot of money are successful. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. As success is mentioned nowadays, it has many aspects. Many ways are available to judge whether a man is successful. However, some people tend to judge it in the term of how much money a man makes. While it is certainly a kind of criteria of success, it is not the whole. We can evaluate a person’s achievements in ways other than his or her wealth. First, success is a kind of feeling that is comfortable and reassuring. It is acquired by achieving goals. The goal here does not imply very much money. It’s some value a person wants to make in his life. It can be making one’s family happy, making people whom one respects comfortable, or bringing the people of the world feeling of peace. They have nothing to do with money and they cannot be judged by wealth either. It is only related with what a person cherishes most. People, in general, put their emotional needs above the physical needs. In this sense, the satisfaction based on material gains cannot overwhelm the mental content. Say, what if a man has the most money in the world but unfortunately lost his family’s love? Money can buy a lot of things, but it is not omnipotent. It cannot bring people happiness for sure. On the other hand, how much a person earns is, in a way, one of the criteria to gauge his success. In today’s world where mammonism prevails, wealth represents power and abilities. So it is supposed that a successful man, who has abilities, should make a lot of money. Besides, the wealth a person owns is ostensible to others, which means people can easily tell whether someone is rich or not according to superficial acquaintance. Thus, salary, or income in general, is related to one’s social status and hence the evaluation of how successful he is by others. In a word, richness cannot be equated with success, but it is simply one of the ways in which people can tell whether or not someone is successful.
