There are some people who support the point that promotion should based on seniority,while other people think differently, they believe promotions should based on performance. After pondering this question in many occasions, I stand for the latter view point. Promoting people based on performance could save the money, find the better employees and up grade the working efficiency for the company. In the following discussion, I would like to reason and provide evidence to support my viewpoint.
The first plain truth, I am presenting here, is that promoting people based on performance keep the loyalty of the employees to the company. Today, nothing is more important than human resource to a company. And the loyalty of the employees determines the quality of human resource. The feeling of belonging keeps a good employee from leaving the company , and doing anything against the company. If everyone could get the higher position though out their effort, he or she will undoubted be faithful to the company. History witnesses so many examples. The HP, the most prestigious company, has a perfect system of promotion based on performance. Therefore, the most striking conclusion is obvious that
Furthermore, behind my preference lies an equally important fact that promotion based on performance saves considerable amount of the money cost. To find and cultivate a capable employee cost a company much less money rather than to steal someone from its competitor. Besides, the own people is much liable. Statistical reports from Hong Kong have demonstrated that those companies which promote people base on their performances always receive far more money and have less human resource cost than those who don't . Last but not least, promoting people base on their performances is also beneficial to some other areas. For example, the employees are encouraged to work harder, so the efficiency of working becomes higher.
Admittedly, promoting people base on the seniority has merits as well. For instance, there will be no competition between the coworkers, and the relationship may be very harmony. However, this will cause a drop of work efficiency. And promotion base on seniority doesn’t have the other advantages of promotion base on performance.
To sum up, although both sides have its merits, promotion based on performance is obviously a better choice than promotion based on seniority. Because promotion based on performance makes the employees more loyal to the company, saves a lot of money and upgrade the efficiency. With those benefits, every company should promote people base on their performance. |
