shadowoflight,

I made phone calls to mba office of CUHK and HKUST just now, both of them will accept ur military education backgroud, what u should do is to open their websit and check if u can meet their enrolment requirment.

And I was told that CUHK will open its application in December, the deadine is the end of January; HKUST will start in October or November, they are not sure about the deadline.
CUHK office told me, if u want to the application package, u should send ur mailing address to them before December.

Up to ur schedule, I think it is too rushed for u if u take GMAT in Jan, because it is little late for u to prepare other application materials. If u have to do this, u may prepare the materials in advance and after taking ur GMAT, send the copy of unoffical score to them immediately, and tell them u will send the offical one as soon as possible. And another problem is that u should take TOEFL if u want to apply HKUST.

I took TOEFL in Sept, and took GMAT in Dec. After 15 days considation, I decided to apply the MBA programs in HK, so before the Chinese spring festival I sent them my package, but it was too pressing. If u can prepare it early, it will be fine.

Here I attach the requirements of both schools:
1. CUHK:
Academic Requirements

Admission to the Full-time MBA Programme, the MBA Programme (Evening Mode) and the MBA Programme (Weekend Mode) is open to graduates of recognized colleges and universities with a bachelor's degree, normally with Honours not lower than Second Class Lower Division or with an average grade of not lower than 'B'.

Applicants who have recognized professional qualifications equivalent to an honours degree may also be considered for admission. Those applying to the Evening and Weekend Programmes are required to have at least three years of full-time work experience after obtaining their bachelor's degrees or recognized professional qualifications.

GMAT Requirement

In addition to possessing outstanding records, the MBA Programmes require all applicants to take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) administered by the Education Testing Service (ETS), Princeton, U.S.A. The GMAT test is delivered on computer. The GMAT is administered in Hong Kong and in other cities throughout the world.

For our admission purpose, the scores of GMAT tests taken more than three years prior to the admission year are not considered.

The GMAT scores of applicants are considered only if they are received by our Admissions Office by the end of February prior to their September admission date. Applicants should arrange to send the official GMAT scores to the MBA
Programmes of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (The code is 0812).

English Language Proficiency Requirement

All applicants must satisfy this requirement before admitted to the MBA Programmes. To meet the requirement, the verbal score of GMAT test will be assessed. This verbal score will be shown on the official score report of GMAT test when applicants having taken the test. For admission purpose, only those scores obtained within the last three years from the date of application are considered.
Full-time MBA Programme:
-    Bachelor's Honours Degree (not lower than Second Class Lower Division Honours or B Grade) or equivalent professional qualification
-    GMAT
-    Work Experience (preferable)
    MBA Programmes (Evening and Weekend Modes):
-    Bachelor's Honours Degree (not lower than Second Class Lower Division Honours or B Grade) or equivalent professional qualification
-    GMAT
-    At least three years post-qualification full-time work experience

Admission Procedures

Beginning in December, application forms for the MBA Programmes may be obtained from the Admissions Office, MBA Programmes, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shatin, N.T., or from the MBA Town Centre at 1/F, Bank of America Tower, 12 Harcourt Road, Central. The form must be completed and returned to the Admissions Office no later than February 28, 2003 (for local applications) only. Applicants may also submit online applications at https://mbaonline.baf.cuhk.edu.hk. Two copies of the most updated official transcripts of all undergraduate work must be sent directly to the Admissions Office by the registrar(s) of the institution(s) where the applicant's undergraduate work was taken. Students in their final year of their undergraduate courses are required to send in their final transcripts as soon as they are available. Besides, two recommendation forms must also be completed by the referees and directly sent by them to the Programmes.

After reviewing the application files, shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview with faculty members of the MBA Programmes. The interview provides an opportunity for the faculty members to evaluate the applicants' analytical and interpersonal abilities, on top of their managerial and leadership potentials. Admission interviews are held in April in Hong Kong. The final acceptance result will be sent to each candidate shortly after the interviews. Admitted candidates are required to make registration by the end of May. They should not register simultaneously in another course of study or research leading to the award of a degree, diploma or certificate either at this University or at any other tertiary institution. A student in breach of this regulation shall be required to discontinue studies at the University.

Students from Overseas
The MBA Programmes welcome applications from overseas students who live or work abroad. The application deadline is January 31, 2003 instead. Interviews for selected applicants will be conducted via telephone or in person by CUMBA representatives.

Admitted overseas students must obtain a student visa in order to study in Hong Kong. Overseas applicants accepted for admission should make their own enquiries about entry visa requirements at:

The Hong Kong Immigration Department
7 Gloucester Road, Wanchai, Hong Kong
Tel: (852) 2824 6111
Fax: (852) 2877 7711
website : http://www.info.gov.hk/immd/

Applicants must also name a resident in Hong Kong, aged over 21, to act as a sponsor.

Those who are unable to get a sponsor may apply to the Graduate School Secretariat to act in this capacity.

    Frequently Asked Questions for AdmissionsOn admission matters: 1. What are the admission requirements?     A bachelor's degree, normally with Honours not lower than Second Class Lower Division or with an average of not lower than ' B ', or with recognized professional qualificaitons equivalent to an honour's degree;
-     Working experience:
-     For MBA Programmes (Evening and Weekend Modes): At least 3 years' of full-time work experience after obtaining their bachelor's degrees or recognized professional qualifications
-     For Full-time MBA Programme: Working experience preferable
-     GMAT
2. What are the admission requirements for overseas applicants?     No additional admission requirement applies to overseas applicants. For any shortlisted non-local applicants, interviews will be conducted via telephone or in person by CUMBA representatives.
3. What's the minimum GMAT score required? What's the average of the GMAT scores of the students?     It depends on the applicant pool of that admission year. However, according to the past records, the average score is around 600. It is even higher for part-time programme, i.e. 630/640. Applicants should note that GMAT score is only one factor in the very comprehensive application process.
4. What criteria will be taken into consideration when assessing the applicants? And what are their weighting?     - GMAT score- Academic results of his/her undergraduate studies- Recommendations- Work experience- Essay of the reasons for studying for an MBA degree- Interview (for shortlisted candidates only)
Weightings: There are no one or two most heavily weighted factors in the application. The CUMBA Programmes take a "whole package" approach in the assessment of candidates. We look at all factors of an application and weigh each according to the individual's total file.5. Is there a selection interview required?     An interview is required. For non-local applicants, the interview may be conducted either in person or via telephone, at the discretion of the Selection Committee.
6. Does my undergraduate degree have to be in business or commerce to apply to the Program?     No, it does not. While we generally have around 30% of candidates who have undergraduate business or commerce degrees, the other candidates come from a variety of other disciplines.
7. If my file is missing just a few materials, will it still be assessed?     Other than under very rare and exceptional circumstances, we cannot review files unless they are fully complete. This means that we must receive:
    - the completed application form;- the application fee of HK$180 (US$25);- sealed & original transcripts of all tertiary educational institutions attended;- completed essay;- original GMAT score report sent directly from ETS; and- two sealed & confidential reference letters from either professional- or academic sources.
Then, we will arrange interviews for shortlisted candidates.Please note that it is necessary for an applicant to have a bachelor's honor's degree from an accredited institution, have taken the GMAT test and have worked for three years in the case of the Part-time programmes in order to be considered for admission.8. Under what circumstances can students exempt from "IT Proficiency Test"?     This requirement applies to all MBA students. All postgraduate students in CUHK must take the test before graduation. Exemption will NOT be granted except to those students who have already fulfilled the requirement at CUHK before entering the MBA Programmes.
9. For the "English Language Proficiency Requirement" , is there a minimum required for the verbal score of GMAT test?     Since the requirement is to ensure all admitted students have that proven ability, your successful attempt in taking the GMAT test has served that purpose.
10. I am a master's degree holder. Why am I still required to take GMAT test?-     it is required by most of the top business school in the world;
-     it serves as a fair and effective screening process for all applicants irrespective of their background;
-     it proves applicants' abilities in various aspects;
-     it ensures the quality of admitted students.
11. Can I transfer to the CUMBA Programmes from another MBA school?     Applications are only accepted for admissions to the beginning of the programme. We do not accept transfer credits for courses done at other MBA programmes.
On other programmes' matters:12. What is the estimated budget for an overseas student admitted in full-time programme in 2003?Tuition fee:    HK$133,650 (US$17,135)
On-Campus Room:    HK$23,400 (US$3,000)
Books and Class Reading Materials:    HK$10,000 (US$1,282)
Food, Local Transportation andPersonal Expenses:    HK$75,600 (US$9,692)
Total:    HK$242,650 (US$31,109)
13. Any financial aids and/or scholarships for students?      In addition, scholarships/bursaries covering half of the tuition fee of the programme will be awarded to outstanding candidates who are admitted to the Full-time MBA Programme.
