Rotman

Schulich

Here are some tips to help you write your essays:

1. Discuss your personal and professional development over the past
five years and describe how these changes have led you to choose to do
your MBA at this time. What are your career goals and how will a Rotman
MBA help you to achieve them?

We want to know:  Why do you want an MBA?  Why now?  What do you expect
to do after your MBA?  Why have you chosen Rotman?  I know that you
have the answers to these questions.  Just write it down and you'll have
your first draft.  Don't worry about what you think we want to hear.

2. One of the Rotman School's underlying principles is the value of
one; this value reflects the belief that each member of the Rotman
community has unique needs and talents. What are your greatest talents and/or
abilities and how would each enhance the experience of your classmates?

How do expect to contribute to the school?  What do you like to do and
are willing to share with your classmates?  Would you like to
participate in an existing activity or start a new one?

3. Imagine that ten years from now a colleague is describing you to a
new employee. What will s/he say about you that you are not known for
now? How will you achieve these new skills?

What do you need to do to get to where you what to be in 10 years?  And
it's not just doing a Rotman MBA!

4. Describe a professional experience when you did not live up to your
full potential. What would you do differently if you had to do it over
again?

Have you ever made a mistake?  And what have you learned from it?
Choose an example that you can write about in a meaningful way. Note,
however, that the question is asking for a professional experience, so no
need to divulge any embarrassing personal information!

Rotman
We have had a number of requests for tips on reference letters and I'm
happy to include the following to help you select your referees.

The source of your reference is an important factor which the
Admissions Committee will review carefully in order to determine your candidacy
for Rotman's M.B.A. program.  This portion of your application carries
considerable weight - your references are our most reliable resource in
terms of assessing your professional accomplishments, your
interpersonal skills and your leadership potential.  Therefore, choose your
referees carefully and be sure to consider the following:

1. Two professional references are required.  I do not recommend that
you include academic references as they will not be weighed equally.  The
committee will be looking to see whether your referees can attest to
your performance in a professional setting.

2. It is not advisable to choose:  subordinate employees, colleagues,
=93mentors?or family friends - regardless of the relevancy of their
professional background.  The committee seeks references which are both
accurate and un-biased, as well as those from individuals who occupy a
senior position in relation to the applicant.  For these reasons, it is
recommended that you choose current and/or previous supervisors who you
have reported to directly.

3. Do not pick referees based solely on their title, or their senior
position within your workplace.  Be sure to select a supervisor who knows
you and who can attest to your skills and abilities firsthand.

4. Avoid referees from part-time positions or internships.

5. Don't assume because someone has agreed to be your referee, that
he/she will be positive.  Take the time to meet with your referees and
state why you have chosen them and what they can add to your MBA
application.

6. Remember to state your 'Reason for Choosing Referee'.  Clearly
indicate your professional relationship to the referee.  If your referee is a
former supervisor who has moved to a new company, state this fact as
well as the title the individual held at the time that you reported to
him or her.  Fill in all of the fields on the Referee Information form
including your referee's current title, employer and contact information.

7. Encourage your referees to cite specific examples regarding your
performance.  Don't hesitate to remind them of your accomplishments and the
impact you have had on the organization! A good reference is explicit
and detailed, highlighting situations which exemplify both your
interpersonal skills and leadership abilities.

8. If you have been self-employed since your undergraduate degree, or
have been employed in a family-owned business; your references should be
from individuals who have worked with you in a professional capacity,
and should not come from an employee.

I hope you find it helpful!
