 I'm '78 too.  I think 28/29 is an excellent age to pursue a MBA program.  The fact that you're doubting your decision about a job switch is already a great start.  I'd recommend getting GMAT out of the way first and then ponder your path while you prepare for the application. Until you get the acceptance letter, it is not your decision, to attend or not.
 
 Whatever you do, make sure it's not a decision you'd look back and regret about.
 
 
   
 Totally agree. One of conservative strategies is to invest in accumulative fashions. Preparing GMAT, writing essays... those activities incur LZ little opportunity cost, compared with attending one.  
   
 The formula is even simpler if LZ limits application to TOP 10. I don't think LZ will dismiss a Harvard diploma, until her last name is Gates.
