My friends told me: NYU admits a bunch of Columbia losers.

just for fun...

We don't care who your friend is, but please mind your insulting words.  There are pros and cons for either school, and there is no absolute good or bad.  I know one guy in my block who gave up Columbia offer and come to Stern, and it's no surprise some of my classmates just did not apply for Columbia.

Show your respect to others when you talk.  This is no fun at all.

As long as B-school is concerned, Stern is definitely catching up, especially in Finance area. I believe there are as many as, if not more students who have got decent offers from major players on Wall Street.

See if the school is a fit for you. Columbia is disadvantageous in terms of location, it's relatively far from downtown and worse in security. But it has its reputation and somewhat higher ranking. Stern offers flexibility, rich life, zero distance to Wall Street, countless career opportunities and extremely helpful alumni. But it really depends on yourself if you could get an ideal intern and full time offer for yourself. As long as Chinese students focusing on Finance industry are concerned, I don't see any discrepancy in the level of placement, and even better with Chinse Sternies(by the way, it's a school name now, not that we are named after the gentlemen).

In term of "loser", it's just what the school thinks whether the guy is a fit. There are people who are admitted to Columbia who lost NYU. There are people who didn't even apply for Columbia, like me. So, you could post this statement in quotation, but it's definitely not FOR FUN.

With all due respect to NYU, please face the fact: NYU b-school sold its name to a scum.  Don't pretend it's a name the school is born with.

i'm not at the position to judge Leonard N. Stern and i don't know whether you have the authority to make that "scum" statement. Leonard N. Stern earned B.S. and M.B.A. degrees from New York University, and served as an NYU trustee from 1976 - 1996. So the school is named after him for some reason.

But it's not rare that top B-schools are named after major donators and it's not a real issue whether the name is born with or not, e.g. Sloan of MIT and Haas of Berkeley. From their websites, i don't see the names are that they are "born with".

Anyway maybe it's time we can get back to the real topic here...

this question is too general to answer, but keep this in mind if you want to seek FINANCE jobs in NEW YORK, i can say Stern is as good as ANY OTHER top b-schools. Because for job-seeking, school brands can only help you to get interview invitation, anything after that depends on yourself. And Stern can offer you the chance to get interview.

Stern definitely has a better location, the downtown advantages include countless bars and restruaunts in walking distance and easy access to colorful NYC life. But Columbia do have higher ranking in general.

From insider's point of view, i can't say Stern's community is better than Columbia because I am not in the other school. But what I know is Stern people are really warm-hearted and willing to help. The relationship between 1st year and 2nd year is very close. From day 1 we were told by second year MBAs they were there to help and there is not one single time when I reach out to 2nd year MBAs but is turned down.

So as an international student, I could quickly adapt to this new environment thanks to many fellow students help.

I'm happy i don't fall into the columbia losers' category because Stern is the only school i applied and I am very HAPPY with that. I will never regret I come here most importantly because of the people here.

lukapurple, take it easy. What they say is just what they say, and we are is still what we are. But i admit this is not funny.

I had a choice between Stern and CBS (1.5-year program) last year, and
I chose Stern with almost no doubt.    In retrospect, I don't regretted
and I will never ever regret for my decision.

I
also have some
comments in addition to those of upstairs. What we will gain in business
school includes advances in career, business knowledge, network, and memory of this brief two years.  May not cover everything but I think these are the things I am
trying to achieve.   Career wise, the name of the school is a ticket to
get in the interviews' door, and  Stern's  name is strong enough no
matter whether you are in finance or other industries.  Whether you can
get a job or not depends on individuals credentials.   Knowledge
wise, I can not comment on CBS because I don't know that much of CBS's
corriculum.  Interestingly I saw my old post over a year ago.  So far I
am amazed by some of the professors and their teaching styles at Stern,
I just
love to sit there and enjoy their speech, and never feel have enough.

The
Stern community is innovative, exciting, inspiring, and
supportive. Greenwich village is just a such fun
and exciting place to be.  The school is surrounded by variety of
restaurants, bars, theaters, and shops.  It is so easy to find a place to eat with
friends in walking distance, or do bar hopping. It is easy go
anywhere too, so we have more choices of living and will save a
lot of time in commuting to school or meetings or part-time jobs.  I am
very impressed by the background and experiences of my
classmates.  There are tons of events that you can participate to
interact with them.  I feel I will never be able to do everything even
if I have 48 hours in a day.  I really learned a lot from them, the way
they communicate,
think, study, and have fun. This 2 years will leave me so much
colorful memory to keep forever.

I
cannot comment too much on CBS because my knowledge of CBS is limited.
I know several CBS chinese students and they are fabulous.  But I LOVE
Stern!  That's what matters to me.  I talk too much I guess, I am
excited about Stern!

Mr. Lenard N. Stern is a leader of US real estate. He inherited Hartz, a pet supply company, from his father and developed it into one of the most successful real estate group. He is among the 50 richest american and the 100 richest people in the world. He is also the founder and Chairman of Homes for the Homeless, America's largest non profit provider of emergency housing for homeless families.

Comparing with Mr. Stern, dear Sachem, who is a SCUM?
