请问为什莫 to allow is not an idiomatic way to modify devices?

根据薄冰语法书, 逗号可以用于两个分句之间.eg:

 We're here anyway, and that's luck.

The hero is dead, but his name still lives.

so the sentence: Jose Canseco is still a feared batter, most pitchers don't want to face him . is correct.

If in this case: Jose Canseco is still a feared batter and most pitchers don't want to face him . that's a run_on sentence. ( in this sentence I assume "and" is correct)

终于明白A为什么run-on了．當兩個獨立子句中的第二個子句包含一個代表第一個獨立子句的代名詞時：

This computer doesn't make sense to me, it came without a manual.

雖然這兩個子句相當簡短，而且關係相當密切，但卻是個 run-on sentence。我們必須以句點來取代逗點。

所以如果Ａ中modems后面是“."那就不是run-on了~

你没发现吗？你引用的2个句子的逗号后面都有一个连词啊。

看了大家的讨论，我的理解是：

Computer are becoming faster, more powerful, and more reliable, and so too are modems, they are the

devices to allow two or more compuuters to share information over regular telephone lines.

阴影部分是第一个句子，“,and”连接的是第二个句子，第二个句子中已有一个主谓完整的句子了so too are modems(虽然是倒装），这样的结构是正确的，可是接着“，”又来一个“they are”主谓完整的句子，似乎就不正确，（，不能连接2个主谓完整的句子）即run-on，所以只能是改成同位语从句。
