I have been living in California for 4 years and will go to Anderson this fall. My daily work includes contact with those Top IBs and top buy-side investment management companies at west coast. I also know lots of students from both schools. I have to say both schools offer equal opportunities in finance! UCLA is one of the two schools at west coast that attract all top banking firms. I once personally talked to a portfolio manager who graduated from wharton and now works for a hedge fund company in LA. He told me IB's west coast offices are more and more important recently and, of course, more and more IB job positions here. What's more, CA also has lots of buy-side companies. So, compared to east coast, the total absolute job positions are still less than the streets, but how many students in anderson and hass? the competition is not so fierce as that at east coast. Finance is not only IB. For corporate finance, how many big name and growing companies in CA? Google, Sun, Oracle, Amgen, Genotech, etc etc etc For faculty, UCLA has several big name professors. UCLA's finance phd program is no doubt top 10. So believe me or not, UCLA & Berkeley will offer u a good start in finance. As to consulting, Berkeley is slightly better. I don't know too many people in this field. I was told about this by the consulting club president of ucla. Anyway, I admit that I am a little biased coz I am a super fan of California. I always think CA is the second best place to live. (the first is absolutely my hometown )
